I have had sky HD for a while now and think its great for watching all sports and movies in. But as Blu-ray is supposed to be even better quality I wondered if anyone had actually seen anything in it yet?

I know the PS3 plays the films, but there does not seem that many films you can buy. Besides the PS3 there only seems to be samsung who make a Blu-ray player and that's over priced I feel at £750. I am slightly tempted to get one, but worried it wont take off and end up spending a lot of money for nothing.

Does anyone have any feedback on if they are any good or not?

Blu-ray just holds more data (uses blue laser which has shorter wavelength and hence can discriminate between pits and lands more clearly) which supposedly means that you can place higher resolution images on it. It will however be limited by your television, the resolution of the filming equipment, how good your speakers are etc. So to be able to take full advantage of it, you'll need to invest in far more than just a Blu-ray player.

With blu ray, I've noticed that they really need to increase the amount of make up they put on the actors, because every little imperfection on people's faces is shown, vs regular dvd, where the inferior quality shrouds it a little better.

Yes, I own a PS3, I found the image too be a little more clearer. Not that much of a difference...

I'm just back from strolling through the shopping street (it's sales time here atm)

Obviously I entered the hifi / tv ... electronics store.

They have a blu-ray plugged into the biggest screen I've seen in my life (for the detail nazis, biggest tv screen in one piece): 240 cm ! At the moment that I was in the shop, the street chase scene of the latest Bond movie was playing. Cristal clear image at 1m distance; surround sound pumping in my ears; goddamn where is that case filled with money when you need it (price for the installation € 75,000).

Coming home to your own ordinary tv will never be the same after such an experience

I've got a PS3 and watched Casino Royale on it, it looked fantastic. Not sure it was any better than Sky HD though as I think that looks fantastic too!

Nope, i got a 360 without ever seeing it play, and even my sky HD as well and they both turned out ok. Also everyone i know has 360's and not PS3's so i wouldn't be able to check it out if i wanted to.

Blu-ray is kicking HD DVD's ass as far as I know. The prices for it have been coming down, not quite as cheap as HD DVD but it's getting there. Blu-ray has more exclusive backers in addition to the dual format backers. And Blockbuster (not sure if you have them in the UK, they're a huge video rental chain) has expressed they will only carry Blu-ray in their stores.

I think Blu-ray's gonna be the victor. It'd be nice if one format would just hurry up and die though. Preferrably Blu-ray since I already have a PS3.

I haven't seen a blu-ray movie but they're friggin expensive. I saw Night At The Museum going for £14.99 on ordinary DVD and £24.99 on Blu-Ray.

Yes, and the difference between it and DVD is remarkable.

Thats a lot of money there...

And Simpsons movie?  Why!?  I'm pretty sure animation can't get any more high-def than standard HD

Oh it can..

I didn't think so either.. but the other day, I was watching Family Guy in High Def, then I went to the normal channel playing the same episode, you could clearly see the difference.. Not as easily as if you were watching Football or Hockey, but you could still tell.

I have Casino Royale on Blu-Ray.  I actually don't have a standalone player -- I've got a Blu-Ray drive on my HTPC.  It looks beautiful, and the frame rate is seamless.  Granted, you have to have a good setup for your computer to play Blu-Rays without any lag.  It plays considerably better than standalone players as well.
