I was playing BF2 earlier, and noticed that it requires a direct hit with a missile to damage a plane/helicopter.  Now, as I'm sure many of you know, a direct hit from a SAM would turn a jet into metal confetti, not do slight damage, and all modern missiles have proximity fuses, since a direct hit on a moving target is nearly impossible.

So here's the question, should EA have given the SAMs and aircraft missiles proximity fuses instead of impact fuses?

I think that it would quickly solve the overpowered jet issue, but thats just me.

Jets are a powerful asset in war. They're overpowered because they're supposed to be. Those of you who complain about jet whores just aren't good enough to counter them. Someone going 45-0 on Wake is just a good pilot. A J-10 does give an advantage over any other jet, but they're certainly not impossible to take down by any means.

As for the poll at hand, I'm not even sure why you would implement this. What would be the difference in a proximity fuse and the missile hitting the jet hitbox normally? Why not just increase overall AA strength because that basically sounds like what you're suggesting.

Only the J-10 is truly over powered. Everything else can be taken care of by a good fighter pilot on your team or AA on the ground.

Actually, I think we should go back to the accuracy of the pre-1.2 missiles, but have a direct hit equal a kill, and require 2 explosions near equal a kill as well. I think it would be much more interesting.

maximize the range of aa and lower the reload time of stinger-sites and mobile aa. that would solve the problem by changing two values

In order to have realistic jets and such you would need the following...


Maps 50,000 meters across
AA has range of 5,000 meters
AA has a proximity fuse, it explodes when i gets within 10 meters of the jet and shreds it
Jets have realistic flares, and can fly up to realistic heights (10K meters)
Jet missiles have range of 5,000 meters
Jets have a realistic speed, and will travel 1,000 meters in 6 seconds as a jet flying 1,000 kilometers an hour would (and thats slow)
Jets own tanks from 10,000 meters up, and tanks can't shoot back

Being a total AA whore on certain maps this is a bad idea.

If you cant use AA then you need to learn. However the Essex Gun missiles have a bad tendancy to miss their targets and require adjusting.

The essex guns to need to be powered up a bit, not just for the planes though, if anyone has ever seen an attack heli just hovering outside of gun range TV the hell out of the carrier.

But proximity explosions would make it quite fun, maybe a proximity of like 1-2 meters would be balanced.

no i think the only thing that would fix the jet issue is to make the AA ceiling for jets over 300 which is the current limit. If they made it say 450 or 500 youd see alot more jets going down. Problem solved. You dont want to nerf the jets to much as it is a part of the game i just cant stand how all they do is pull up and AA cant hit them its lame.

I'd say yes as it'd deal with hit reg problems on J10s, for the sake of good fun over realism I'd decrease the damage though.

Yeah jets aren't overpowered, if you're going to make AA better may as well give jets a real payload and a 21st century bomb targeting system.

Yes, the f35 would be unstoppable. Pop flares, fly with the flares, then do a stratorun and outrun the missiles. Every other jet would get owned except the f35.

It would end up a bit like the AA on DC, fire that, miss, but it still explodes. It would be better if the F-35 could go faster, turn better, have a smaller hitbox, missiles that work and also flares that work better. Also drum the J-10 down a bit.

Aim above the target, the Essex gun always fires the missles too low, conversly, easy to avoid them if you fly straight at them and climb a bit.
