When I want to turn off my main computer, I just press the Power Button once and everything then shuts down. But is this an ok way to turn it off?

I'm not holding it down for 5 seconds, just pressing it in once.

Cheers, Link

ideally not. it could force-quit some things which is bad.

I think it's fine. Just pressing the power button is the same as "Start" --> "Shut down"

They are no where near the same. One is a hard shutdown, like unplugging it. The other gives Windows a chance to shutdown, and save anything you mite of done.

Don't do it unless your computer freezes.

I do that if I know I don't have any apps running, or if I can't be stuffed turning on my monitor to shut down.

No, it's actually the same.  There are options in control panel:  What to do when on button is pressed - shut down, stand by, hibernate, etc.

Not true, if you hold it down for 5 seconds is is not ideal, but just pressing the power button is not dammaging.

I use Alt F4 and hold the power button for 5 seconds way too often but it never seems to do much harm. Firefox ever tells me i can restore my sesion when i turn it back on.

I sometimes do that, but very rarely. Just go start > shut down. It's safer that way.

Windows key+U+U takes less time then reaching down to find the power switch, and you dont need a moniter to do it, just a keyboard.

i don't think it matters much anymore ... the ok time I won't slam the power button is when vmware is running.

Newer systems are configured when you press the power button it send the shutdown command, which is the same as saying shutdown in the menu. My past two laptops have behaved like this.

You're wrong, tbh. Though, I guess it may be different for some PC's.

If I press the power button it will start the shut down process as normal, asking me if I want to save any changes to stuff.

I I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds, it cuts the power.

It looks like not many of you are paying attention to the fact that he doesn't hold the button down for 5 seconds, he simply presses the button to turn it off.

As liquidator said, this appears to be no different from pressing start and shutting it down.  It gives you the screen saying that windows is shutting down and all of that stuff you would get from using the start menu shutdown.

Cheers.

Yeah, I just press it once, which is probably holding it down for less than a second, and all things then close.

From the replies that I thought read my OP, I'd say it's ok.

Cheers all

Oh and you're pushing these keys in sequence, not combo, or you'll just unleash the spawn of Satan.

Yeah just when I get used to it, they drop it in Vista. Now its

Winkey+RightArrow+RightArrow+RightArrow+Enter. Oh that's much better.

What are you talking about? Its one of the most useful keys.

Win+D: Show Desktop
Win+E: Windows Explorer
Win+F: Find
Win+L: Lock Computer/Switch User
Win+M: Minimize Windows
Win+U: Spawn Of Satan
Win+R: Run Command
Win+Pause: System Properties
Win+1-0: Quicklaunch hotkeys (Vista only)
Win+Tab: Funkin' Alt+Tab (Vista only)

There's also Win+B. Don't know what it does but it pisses me off that I can't use Win+ZXCVB for Winamp.

Now SysReq, that's a useless key.

Win+B deselects current windows without minimizing them. I believe it selects your taskbar.
