Yea, but you seem happy with the parts you have chosen; assuming you gonna find the right hard drive.
Let me expand. I am not getting anything. I have no computer. I have no money. I have no parts.
I forgot to add that in at the end of the topic.
Your hard drive failed on your current computer - right?

What if I'm thinking of OC'ing?

(The thermalright ultra 120 is too big to fit in my case without removing a fan in the case).
tbh I don't run it up. I "pseudo overclocked it" (to 2.93) using an auto-overlcok  function of the motherboard, the tempuraure rose, but not by much - yet noticeable gains in 3dmark.

The main point I'm trying to make is the biggest heat sink in the world is poinless without good airflow n the case. You can find arguments in both directions for the zalman. For me it seemed pointless ... but thats only my opinion
meh, this is stupid advice. If you OC seriously, you will need to raise the Vcore. Once you change that you will need something better than the stock HSF, unless you want to have serious overheat problems. No amount of airflow will change that. AFAIK the airflow in the alienware cases is actually decent.
You don't always have to go raising the Vcore. My 6300 runs nice and stable at 3GHz at stock voltage. If I push the voltage up to 1.4 I get upto 3.6 ok, but it gets a little warm under load. Conroes OC nicely at stock, but you still get extra heat at stock voltages.

sure you get some extra heat, but nothing like what you get when you raise Vcore. Anyhow my point is that if you wanna OC more than a few 100MHz you will need something better than a stock HSF to guarantee good temps

Actually most of the time I have my opty sitting at stock volts @ 2.6GHz. My lappy is undervolted to 0.95V. Seeing as I can't OC it, I at least wanna have long battery run times (approaching 11h now)

oh, I consider only consider OCing "serious overclocking" when the Vcore has been raised. before that its just falls under normal tweaking for me

Just ordered!

I ordered the Zalman, but the bigger one with the 110mm fan:   Zalman CNPS9700

And a batch of lube loving 'Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound'  cos I want it all to be happy!

Thanks for the help again everyone!

The Noctua is supposed to be a bitch to install
Nonsense?

It comes with all parts you'd need for any contemporary socket, has extra holes where you can put through the screwdriver to fasten it and the backplate procedure is almost always the same. Plus it's got the best manual you could imagine. I bet you've never owned a Noctua product and seen an installation guide from them, though...
Just read that in a review somewhere, which is why I said supposed.

DON'T USE LIQUID METAL!!!!! IT EATS ALUMINIUM!!!!!!!!!!!! not safe. I think that the zalman's thermal grease that comes with the 9700 is very good.

don't worry. AS5 is great, just don't put it somewhere where it could conduct some electricity and short something out.

Am I blind or is the Zalman a copper heatsink?

AS5 is still great, the difference to liquid metal is marginal (and lower than between AS5 and the paste Zalman delivers). Also, you can never know where this stuff is about to have contact with aluminium - and it really destroys it within 10 minutes. Amazing.

I disagree http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho … p?t=135359 its not huge, but there is definitly a difference.

If you apply any thermal paste wrongly you're going to get problems, so picking on my Liquid Pro is pretty stupid.

But still, AS5 will see you through well enough.
