Hi all
I recently had to change my monitor from a 19" crt to a 17" lcd and my gameplay is now so bad it's not even fun to play anymore.  I played last night and my accuracy (which wasn't good to begin with) went down 1% in a few hours of playing.  It seemed like I couldn't hit anything.  The picture seems better on the lcd monitor, much clearer with better contrast, but the game is kinda jerky.  My ping on the game was about 40-45 but I still noticed jerky gameplay, most noticeably, when just running along in a straight line my character would suddenly spin 90 or 180 degrees in either direction for no apparent reason.
I'm pretty sure I had the refresh rate set at 85hz with the crt monitor, the lcd is set as high as it will go at 75.  Could the problem be as simple as the lower refresh rate, and if so can I solve it with a newer lcd?  This one is a few years old now, or should I try to make room for the old crt again?
Thanks in advance for any help or opinions

I did not think an LCD could have a variable refresh rate. LCDs are getitng better, but I'm certian they are still not as quick (or most are not as quick) as a CRT.

I switched to an LCD simply to save my eyes. My panel is like 3ms G2G ... I can perceive some ghosting, but its tolerable.

One big thing about an LCD is the response time or latency introduced by it.  What is the response time of your new LCD monitor?

Here's some articles describing this issue:

Ghosting at 3ms?? Doesn't happen.

well... 3ms Gray to Gray is not the same as saying Black to White .. and yes it does happen. Granted you see it more in high contrast situations.

This is the panel: http://www.viewsonic.com/products/deskt … ies/vx924/

Oh, i see.
Don;t get me wrong .. it is minor .. and the loss of eye strain + less heat + smaller size is worth it to me.

OMG - I had to do a lot of digging on the Envision website, but I finally found in the manual for this stupid thing that the response time is 50ms !    WTF !    If you guys are using lcd's with 2 and 3ms response times I guess I need to get a new monitor or get the **** outta the game.  Thanks

I just ordered a MAG - 19" Widescreen Flat-Panel LCD Monitor LT1919WDB from Best Buy for $200.  I can go pick it up in a little bit.  Says the response time is 2ms.  That should help, but I just have one more question.  Is that DVI-D connector any faster than the VGA one?  If so I'll buy the cable for it.

Thanks again

If you have DVI out on your video card and a DVI in on the monitor then use that. Don't know if you will perceive a speed difference, but you will get better image quality.

Check though, because the monitor typically comes with one.

The guy at Best Buy said the same thing about the DVI connection - so I got it - only $20 for the cable.  The game seems to be playing much better.  I downloaded that Fraps program - didn't know it was still around - I used to use it with the Janes's Combat Simulation games.  With my video settings on high I'm getting 30-35 frames per second and the game plays pretty good - so I'm happy with it again.

Thanks for all the help

What is your response time?
That would play into effect with your bad gaming performance.

That was my reaction. That must have been one ancient LCD - what resolution is it? Can you like see the individual liquid crystal elements?

Are you all done making fun of my monitor now ?    I guess it was a little older than I thought      :-)
It would do 1024 x 768 and the picture was very good - very clean, but it is gone and the new one is much better.
