thats creepy /shivers
Only rich people would be able to inhabit the area for a very long time considering that if anyone gets there its going to be a huge corporation charging people a crap load just to live in mini huts.
Actually most likely we would have to start again. It would have all the materials we would need and aslong as we had the equipment you could build a near perfect society, ie starting again and making sure you have enough of everything, like hospitals, schools, etc.
Hopefully we can send an extremely powerful tele-mah-scope in space and study this star more. That's the best hope we can get, no chance of reaching it yet. We can't even get close to the speed of light.
Remember that when we look at it, we'll be looking at it how it was 20 years ago. So expect to see some really..........queer stuff. (Cmon, admit it...the 80's was an extremely gay period it's just that nobody admitted it)
I really do hope they find traces of life.

Wikipedia says it's gravity is 1.6 that of Earth. So whilst things free fall @ 9.81 m/s over here, things would fall @ 16 m/s over there. Quite a big difference, but life would for sure adapt to the conditions.

I wonder if we colonized it if people would tend to be shorter due to the gravity. Or if they'll just develop into a group of ubermensch.
I find it very interesting in so much that there is a planet that so closely resembles our own. However, I believe that space is teaming with life. I think the probability is really quite high if you stop thinking that life would require the same/similar environmental conditions as those we would require.
Damned ATG beat me to it! I was sitting in econ class when...waitasec... I thought I posted first >.<
nvm...
Anyway, I had posted my views there...>.>
edit: beat me by about 8.5 hrs - I blame my english time.

I did a calculation based on the acceleration of a better performing ion drive, it should take about 279 Years to get to that planet.

Perhaps we need to do a War Of The Worlds method of travel, put everyone into massive Cylindars and fire them out of the biggest fuckoff cannon we can build, it could work....

1. It's an old star. Either the intelligent life forms have already died out or they are vastly technological superior to us. This could very well be the home our our Area 51 friends.
2. Why do people assume that God only created life on our Earth? My faith won't be broken just because we find aliens. Problem would be our interpretation of God versus theirs.

Question: How fast does the planet rotate? Because if it doesn't rotate fast enough then one side of the planet would be plunged into inhospitably harsh cold every long hard night (given that the planet has a radius much bigger than ours). As such, it might not be possible for life on that planet to develop beyond the amoebic stage.
Good point. I'm also trying to figure out whether I could stand under 1.6G's.CameronPoe wrote:

Not necessarily. We have no prior evidence for them being more advanced or dead. Their progression, if any at all, could be anything.Ilocano wrote:

They said it might be tidally locked. In other words, no days and no nights. Yikes. I reckon that's a big blow when it comes to thinking about life, certainly intelligent life like ours is probably not a possibility anymore. Conditions do seem abit harsher than here, but who knows. They might be wrong about it being tidally locked.ghettoperson wrote:

However there are other theories, like...well, just read the Wiki article lol. And if you don't trust Wikipedia, just use the links they use for references at the bottom...

They say even if it is Tidally Locked, there could be a medium which provides some good conditions. Hell if I know.
Why would it change my beliefs? The bearers of all wisdom in this forum say my beliefs aren’t based on fact and are comprised of complete fiction.ATG wrote:
If you believe in the Biblical God, what would discovery of humans, or human like creatures on another planet do to those beliefs? What if we could talk, and their society was millions of years old and they had different Gods?
If they are so much more highly evolved than we are on earth, I’m sure they’ve noticed our discovery.PureFodder wrote:

I couldn't stand that long, that's for sure.
Everything we need . . . perfect society . . . starting again . . . hmmm. We had that once and someone screwed it all up. Who was it . . . uh, hmmmm. Now I remember . . . humans! The new planet would be perfect until someone found something valuable to fight over.Vilham wrote:

*whispers* They’re already reading this thread. He said “your pewny planet”.
PS He must have one heck of a wireless connection. Sending that post over 20 light years that quickly.
