I wonder if there are people there, and if they are split into sorry divided camps as well.

It's got the same climate as Earth, plus water and gravity. A newly discovered planet is the most stunning evidence that life - just like us - might be out there.
I'm not believing that part. I mean, how much can they tell from a spectrometer?

https://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/04_02/planet_468x457.jpg
That's really far!

https://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/04_02/planet3_468x313.jpg

That would be a nice view!

Just because Gliese 581c is habitable does not mean that it is inhabited, but we do know its sun is an ancient star - in fact, it is one of the oldest stars in the galaxy, and extremely stable. If there is life, it has had many billions of years to evolve.
If you believe in the Biblical God, what would discovery of humans, or human like creatures on another planet do to those beliefs? What if we could talk, and their society was millions of years old and they had different Gods?

how would you go over the problem of mass?  wouldnt that be too big to sustain any kind of life with the amount of gravity pushing things down.  if my memory serves me, the larger the objects mass, the more powerful its gravity.

The whole effect of felt gravity could be totally different, for example, if there is no moon, the same mass may feel heavier or light in relationship to to mass/gravity coefficient here on Earth:D.

You confusing density with mass.

A higher gravity would not be a problem.  Life, if there is life there, would have adapted to the gravitational pull.  And in astronomical terms, that planet is not much bigger than earth.
Good to be back.

I agree, we must strike first while we have the element of surprise.
Chances are though it's just a big rock.

Unfortunately they don't go into any detail at all on how this was discovered. I'll see if I can find the story from a source that isn't aimed at drooling idiots tomorrow.

20 lightyears? If there's anything smart up there we could start a fairly practical interstellar communication. It'll be interesting to see our grandkids huddled around the TV/telephone/computer thingamabob of the future waiting to find out what the Glieseans (?) are saying to us.

We all know there's life out there, we just can't ship 8-9 billion people that far, then come back for materials for building

That would be cool though to see that other Saturn-like planet above you at night.

A spectrometer will give the relative quantities of all the elements. The rest is just speculation.

To hell with spending money on fixing global warming; we should just concentrate on creating a gigantic ark that we can ship to that planet.
