i guess it's a better way of spending your disposable income than recreational drugs or expensive records, so i can't really talk.

but it does seem to me that the high-end hardware thing is like a game-unto-itself, i.e. people 'competing' for the highest 3dmark scores and other pointless tech-wankery. gaming stopped being worth the ticket entry-price of a 'gaming rig' about 4 years ago, imho... ever since then most games and 'demanding' applications have barely been worth their own retail price.
