Wasn't too expensive and it gets the job done. Can run BF2 everything on high at 1280x1024 with 40-70 FPS.

No, in 6months to a year, all his hardware will be out dated. Not obsolete, but definately out dated. That's the rate at which PC developments progress and it isn't looking to slow any - intel are talking quad core next year - graphics hardware is going the same route (first with single-card SLI, then dual/quad/oct-core gpus - That's why spending multiple 1000s of pounds/dollars on a brand-spanking-new machine is slightly crazy - unless you pick you hardware very carefully and get very lucky with future upgrade paths. (note I didn't say totally crazy - it depends on what you want it for and what your budget is, but for the most part, most people will get the best 'bang for buck' purchasing mid->high-end components with a keen eye on upgrade options).
