For the first time ATG I'll have to agree with you.
Look at many of the problems in Africa. Catholic missionaries "converted" them and lo and behold no contraception!

Also rewind to the middle ages. We had 1000 years. A THOUSAND YEARS PEOPLE! With absolute ZERO medical breakthroughs because the church declared them heretics and killed them.

All because they edited the works of Galen a Roman doctor. He said that the GodS had made the human body perfect, the high church edited this and changed it to that he had said that God had made the body perfect. Galen was hearlded as a doctor sent by God to help Christianity, nearly 600 years before Jesus exhisted.

Because of these laws millions dies of dirt and disease because doctors were not allowed to practice or research the world.

I ask what would have happened if we had those years back for study would the human race be far more advanced than it is now?

Oh well. I think I've bashed Catholicism enough, people belive what you want, though don't let it brainwash you.

According to this website : http://www.medicinaantiqua.org.uk/bio_gal.html

The physician and philosopher Galen was born at Pergamum in A.D. 129. His father, Aelius Nicon, was an architect and builder with an interest in mathematics, logic, and astronomy and a fondness for exotic mathematical and literary recreations. His mother, according to Galen himself, was a hot-tempered woman, always arguing with his father; Galen compared her to Socrates' wife Xanthippe.

As far as I know, AD 129 is after Jesus death, as He was crucified in AD 33....

It's suffered worse bashings. I do like the brainwash thing, though. Much like other issues, religion is not an all or nothing thing. That's what gets you marked as an extremist, via being at the extremes of the spectrum. I wouldn't be surprised if the large majority of American Catholics did not agree with the Vaticans stance on birth control. You don't have to believe whatever the Vatican tells you, make it your own. The pope has no control over what you can and cannot do; he is more like somebody watching while you run your life who would say, "Hey _(your name)_, you may wanna _(do this)_ but you don't have to."

What about all the scientific breakthroughs the catholic church has been responsible for? Like Big Bang theory.

I acknowledge the churches rather unusual embrace of astronomy.

Was Einstien a catholic? Otherwise wtf?

Gallileo was imprisoned for studying astrology!

Thinking about it, I don't belive that Catholicism has a strong hold on educated people who can think for themselves, what I do strongly object to is the way they can preach "worship or rot in hell" to "uneducated" people (eg: African states and some people who don't know any better) to do everything they say and take the bible literally.

The whole world thought that the sun rotated around the earth just as they thought the planet was flat. It's the same as the age of the world according to the Bible; it's an archaic belief that very few still hold as most have recognized it as false. I never recall them telling us "worship or rot in hell either." Come to think of it, the never are telling me to worship to begin with. Anyone who would do that is a tool anyway, because there is no reason some seperate entity should govern all the decisions in YOUR life.

Lemaitre does not represent the catholic church. Again, it's not a 'because-of' thing, it's more like a 'coincidence-of' or 'despite-of' thing.

As I said I believe they change their ways of preching to suit the people they are trying to convert, such as if they tried the "worship or rot in hell" to educated Americans then they would have a completely opposite reaction to it, but to "uneducated" people be it homeless Mexicans or African tribesmen it would work as they have never known anything different.

I think no one really takes the Pope seriously. They had their heydays in the 1500's until Martin Luther. I agee with the majority of what you say, the clergy are naive, and its the religious people who do more than the clergy.
however, not always the case, but I agree up to the points you made and claiming on the pope's...naivety.

ATG,

I didn't call you uneducated, I called you uninformed. I've met plenty of people who were either one and not the other. I wasn't trying to lord it over you, I was trying to make clear I was making an informed comment, not being just some loud mouthed 14 year old talking big. I didn't have the space to do otherwise. Personally the fact such a discussion is taking place on a forum about BF2 is great, if a little weird.

I find it amusing that you had a go at someone else for not refuting your points but engaging in loud mouthing, and yet you cherry picked my comments.

And your comment "why is it my problem" says a lot about your attitude. It's your country, so it's your problem.

I'm sure in about August 2001 you would have said "Madman called Osama carrying on in Afghani-where, hates the US, calls us Satan? Not my problem." Probably the same time saying "Global warming? Hah! Greenie propaganda!!! Fill my gas guzzler up with tame Saudi oil, buddy!!!". If you don't know what is going on your world, it has a habit of delivering a pile of steaming number 2s on your porch called Reality.

Also exactly the same reason the US had trouble winning in Vietnam, always picks the wrong dictator to back (Batista, Shah of Iran, etc), and went into Iraq for (i) the wrong reasons and (ii) without a plan. Ignorance or a poorly informed plan.

Go read a book called About Face by a guy called Hackworth. It's a great read about the Vietnam war and the US military generally, by an officer regarded as one of the most brilliant battalion/brigade level commanders of his time, who quit because the military wouldn't actually fight their wars properly. This from a guy who joined as a boy soldier, and who got his entire education through the military, but was most definitely informed.

http://www.hackworth.com/

I actually didn't know he'd died in 2005 until I just got the link to put in here. I just got more informed in dealing witrh your ignorance. There's something vaguely Zen like there - I just +1 karmaed myself accidentally.

My point is, here was a guy who made it his job to get informed to fight a war properly. He respected the NVA and VC for a good fighting force, and what they were fighting for (more Vietnamese nationalism than communism - Ho Chi Minh tried getting the US on side before he went to Mao for patronage). If you are going to regard Catholicism as evil and rail against it, do so fully informed. Never bring a knife to a gun fight, you end up like that scimitar wielding guy in Raiders of the Lost Ark ...

However, on Scientologists I would fully agree with you!!!!!

No need to ban them, just bar them from influencing govt, remove their tax exempt status and require any religious person to wear a patch on their shirt denoting which one they subscribe to.

But the Catholics can go to hell.

Define "worked." Are you looking for a "solution" with some "finality?"
