Despite leading the world in broadband subscribers, the US dropped from 17th to 20th place in broadband penetration over the past year. Falling behind Sweden, the UK, and tiny Luxembourg the US grew by only 27.1% to 44.5% penetration from March 2005 to March 2006. Meanwhile, US broadband penetration among active Internet users grew 1.34 percentage points to 73.1% in June 2006.

Worldwide Broadband Penetration Trends

Worldwide, from March 2005 to March 2006, the US dropped from 17th to 20th place in broadband penetration among all countries surveyed. While the percentage of broadband households in the US grew by 27.1% over the past year (from 34.97% to 44.45%) the US fell behind Sweden, the UK, and Luxembourg due to their higher broadband growth rates (see Figure 2). UK broadband grew 52.3% from 29.6% to 45.1% penetration, leapfrogging the US from 21st to 18th, while tiny Luxembourg surged nearly 85% over the past year to 19th place. South Korea still leads all countries with 83% broadband penetration, followed by Hong Kong with 80.98%, Iceland at 74%, Israel at 69.08%, and Taiwan at 64.65% penetration.

I'm in the UK and I pay £13.99 for 8mb broadband and because I live about 200m from the exchange I get at least 6mb. That is cheaper than $42.00.

America has a rather low population density, so it's no wonder.

i get 6 mb (cable), but very soon i'm switching to dsl 3mb for $25 a month.  i seen somewhere that across the pond you could get highspeed internet, phone and cable tv for like $60 a month, that's why i thought it was cheaper

Broadband can be quite pricey. Not too many discounts beyond initial installation are afforded to the broadband customer. Even at $60 a month for QWest DSL services, I couldn't pirate at lightning speeds if I were so inclined.

And then there are people who take advantage of public libraries' broadband availability to cut that expense altogether.

Its much more expensive to lay broadband in the United States because we have thousands of square miles where the population density is so low that it cost more to lay the wire then the profit made off of it.  The rest of the population that has broadband then has to pick up the slack.

Just so you know, most broadband traffic isn't done via cables, its done by bouncing signals of the atmosphere and satellites.

that test is bullshit, denmark got very shity broadband, and guess why we got so much cable in the ground, it's because phone lines count as broadband lines here in denmark. so the lines are absolutely anywhere, but the connection sucks balls.

yeah, pretty much a good chunk of people live in this area called the "country" or a "rural" area. Basically, it's a big country, pretty spread out, and if you dont live in a city of more than 30,000 or 40,000 .... you're sol on broadband

Too bad the copper wires here can only handle like 4Mbitz of internets per person unless the Exchange/Mainframe is your modem.

We need all round fiber optics. That's something i wouldn't mind the roadworks for.

Actually, fiber optics are more common than you think.  A city with a pop. over 20,000 in the US should have a decent amount of fiber optics laid (then again it also depends on which part of the county you live in).

Also: Lol.  Luxembourg beat the US.

Early roll out in many other countries was subsidized by the government. In the US (due in part to the machinations of the telcos) this wasn't the case.

US Drops to 20th?  lol ... manipulating statistics to get someone else in first ...

US is #1 overall in broadband participation
US is #2 in overall growth in broadband participation

We started the internet ... we've always been the leader in the internet ... and I don't see it changing anytime soon (but, I have to admit China is coming on strong).

I'm sure if you wanted to look at broadband access by female prisoners over the age of 65, then probably some other country would be #1.
