I think becoming members of the EU was a key factor in the growth of many countries.  A fine example would be Ireland, which has now a strong economy and it ranks very well in GDP, HDI and other indexes.
In 2005, Dutch and French voters rejected their governments' plans to ratify the European constitution.  Do these countries think they would be better out of the EU?
Why aren't countries like Norway and Switzerland members of the EU?

Because theyr'e stinking rich, fully 100% developed and joining the EU would only be to their detriment? I was in both Norway and Switzerland recently - there really is nothing left to improve: they are about as close to perfect societies as you can get.

speaking for Switzerland: we have just signed the "Bilateralen II" which gives us all of the trade benefits (and more) of the EU but still being able to keep the political decisions to ourself. We are a very democratic country and the system of the EU does not fit us. There is no real reason to join, because it would only hurt our economy

Maybe they don't want to be. (Guess)

The same way that my country doesn't seem to want to lose the GBP.

because both Switzerland and Norway wouldn't gain anything if they'd join, most nation joined because it was/is an advantage for them.

Actually there are lots left to improve but thats nothing the EU can help us with

Both the EU elections we had in 1972 and 1994 was by the closest possible margins and both where turned down by the Norwegian population.

The two biggest groups against membership is the farmers and the fish related industry who think they`ll be out of work if we join the Union.

We might be stinkin rich now but that`s not a certain fact for the future and i believe in the long run we would benefit from a membership !

That is an odd one actually. I'd say at the time they weighed up the options and thought that they might be left out in the cold economically if all the European nations stopped trading with them in an EU (potentially). They gambled on whether or not it would actually benefit them and it turns out it didn't detrimentally affect them but it didn't do all that much for them.

not really, our NO vote, wasn't directly to the Constitution but more of a way to say "there are other problems to solve first"

but since Holland was a co founder of the EU back in the '50s we won't leave it.

I think you may be right in this one.  Although your country is rich, wouldn't it be better for Norway to be a member of the EU in order to get better deals when it comes to negotiate resources supplies with Russia for instance?  I'm just asking, I don't know the details.

Norway economically wise is richer then Sweden. As CamPoe said, we are filthy stinking rich and if we joined the EU and left the EAA then certain regulations would ultimately put strains on our, currently, booming economy. Our GDP is filthy stinkingingly high and I believe much higher then Sweden's.

Plus, I think there is something to do with our fishing market but I can't remember whether this is correct or not. You must also remember that although we'd hate to admit it, Norwegians are very conservative and joining the EU is something the majority of us are against.

When you join EU there comes a lot of unwanted crap in the deal,a lot of stupid regulations that some idiot in Brussels came up with when he took a dump. For example,in Sweden we have a lot of cows, horses and sheep's and they have roamed around on the open fields since the dawn of time. And then this prick in Brussels comes up with a law that says that all farmers must build big shelters for the animals, because all of a sudden they can't sleep under the bare sky.I mean WTF???
