Even more ironic. Your country was partly founded by religious pilgrims, and yet look at its social state right now.

Correction, Australia was established as a prison. It does not equate to criminals establishing the country.

Somebody from one of the americas'.
But more specifically, and not being a smart ass... An american is someone who continues to act as a free soul and appreciates our country.
If you want to question the government, go ahead. If you want to back the war, go ahead. What is unamerican is blatant disregard for rights. Violence is unamerican, limiting freedom of speech is unamerican...

Religious pilgrims, establishing religious tolerance. 1st amendment, free exercise/establishment, a basic tenet of American society. America was viewed as a land of opportunity. Australia was a land for murderers and rapists. Don't fuck with how America began.

Another thing -- junk food, tv, booze, lazing around, guns, sex, gambling, porn, shootings, drugs?? honestly? I thought we were describing only America, not just about every other country in the world

PS // To all the non-egotistical Aussie's, I really do like Australia (except for the jet lag) and hope to visit one day.

How is what i said untrue?
What i meant was, America was founded by such a group of "good-hearted" ppl, and yet their social problems seem very prevalent.

Egotistical? Look who's talking- "don't fuck with America" boy. My intention was to point out the global image of "Americans" and hopefully induce some internal reflection, and perhaps some anger management.

Furthermore your views of America [junk food, tv, booze, lazing around, guns, sex, gambling, porn, shootings, drugs] do not constitute a global image. To what are you referring to with "internal reflection"

do not mislead, usmarine 2007. The US's technological advances are unquestionable.

Social problems however, require ppl to realise and actively work to fix it, hence internally reflect as a nation

So, maffiaw, you are suggesting that America as a country does not realize nor actively work towards solving social problems, thus we need to "internally reflect"? Can you tell me, concisely, what social problems you see (unique to America) that need correcting, thereby justifying the microscope America seems to perpetually be under???

An American is anyone who understands that achieving the best in life requires risks. Immigrants have no assurance of success in a new land with different habits, institutions and language. They leave friends, relatives and familiar places, often risking their lives to cross oceans and hostile country to reach their new homes. But they, like all Americans, understand that the timid achieve nothing and forgo even that which sustains us through the worst of times: hope.

The nature of Americans explains the precious opportunity that has drawn millions to these shores. The Declaration states that all men are endowed "with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Americans seek economic prosperity, leaving behind the resentment in other countries that is aimed at those who better their material condition. Throughout the world and throughout history, millions of individuals have endured poverty with dignity. But there is no inherent dignity in poverty. Individuals came to America to farm their own farms and run their own enterprises. My grandpop found work on streetcar lines so he could buy a house and provide a better life for his family.

Americans seek personal liberty, to live as they see fit, to worship as they please. Americans seek freedom from the use of power wielded arbitrarily by whoever holds the political sword. My grandpop no doubt did not want to be at Mussolini's mercy.

The Declaration -- and the Constitution that followed it -- created a political regime for individuals who wished to be united with their countrymen not essentially by a common language, ethnic background, or other accident of birth. Americans are united by a love of liberty, respect for the freedom of others and an insistence on their own rights as set forth in the Declaration.

Unfortunately, the American spirit has eroded. Our forbearers would look with sadness at the servile and envious character of many of our citizens and policymakers. But the good news is that there are millions of Americans around the world, living in every country. Many of them will never make it here to the United States. But they are Americans, just as my grandpop was an American before he ever left Italy. And just as millions discovered America in the past, we can rediscover what it means to be an American.

Now that the US have found there is no resources on other planets, the space program is being wound down to nothing, funding removed...maybe americans havent been told that....a few billionaires are working out "their" escape plans but thats about it...

Oh, and Australia bought some overpriced jets off america a few years back, and has had nothing but trouble since(continuing repair costs are rising above the original price of the jets)...so,yeh...thanks for that..

No. There are substantial amounts of natural resources on the various planets, moons, asteroids and dwarf planets.

Case in point. The moon has potential mining value due to the high amounts of the isotope Helium 3, which can be used for fusion reactors, i.e fuel for spacecraft.

Oh, then there's the millions and millions of asteroids out in the asteroid belt which contain substantial amounts of precious metals. Hell, even the solar wind of the sun can be harvested for ultra pure versions of metals such as silicon, gold, sapphire, diamond and other materials, proven as a result of the Genesis probe mission. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_%28spacecraft%29

A US 16.9 Billion dollar funding program is not having its funding removed, either. Look it up.
