this came out of another discussion, in which gotmex talked about the possibility of an additional tier of ranked servers, or 'uber ranked servers.' these would only allow experienced veterans to enter, and thus provide a greater quality of gameplay to competitive players.

along those lines, i came up with this system, it's pretty straightforward.

allow server admins to set a minimum rank for players to join. before you get all upset and flame me for keeping the newbs out of games, remember that EA runs over a hundred ranked servers in the US alone, and they're mostly empty most of the time. there would be plenty of room for all the new players to gain rank.

what would keeping out low ranked players really do? after all, higher rank doesn't equal skill, and there are as many good low ranking players as there are high ranking idiots. well, we can't easily keep the idiots out of bf2. but there is a whole class of smacktard that this WOULD keep out - people that make new accounts just to be assholes, and join servers just to tk and be a general nuisance.

this wouldn't be much different from a true MMORPG, where you can only access certain areas after you've reached the adequate level. BF2 is essentially an online FPS with MMO qualities on the side, after all. when you reach the high level dungeons in an MMO, there are usually less idiots than the lowbie training grounds. why not have high level servers for BF2? sure people are as free as ever to be assholes, but they'll have to do it on their high ranking main account, not a garbage account that they made just to TK people.

i like this idea, americas army has servers where you need a minimum Honor to join, most are set to 10 wich is your starting honor, but atleast it stops the team killers joining cause there honor will be lowere due to lost points.
some server have it set as high as 35 min honor. those serbers are good to play on as you never see tools on there.

I'd rather have a server that autokicked lonewolf about 10 min into the map and then every 10 min until the end of the map. But I can see the theory behind your improvement request. However some of the largest assholes I have encountered in the game had higher ranks.

The idea ain't that bad, but:

- what about alternative/secondary accounts? players with a high ranking account might have a low ranking one as well...
- as kilroy0097 said, many of the motherfucking assholes out there would be high ranking enough to join such servers...

I like more AA' honour thingie, brought up by the_heart_attack.

I think this is an excellent idea, because it would also give the lower ranked players a fighting chance, getting to play against people more on their skill level. I think not only the option of settign a minimum rank should be there, but also the option of setting a maximum rank.

I also like the anti-lonewolf option, but that has certain flaws. Some classes aren't designed for extended squad work. Well... at least one class isn't. The sniper. Besides, this can be done through server-side admin mods or a patch of PB. If you're a typical infantery combat class, and you're not in a squad, you get a hitpoint drain or something. It'll lead to a mass of whining and general disagreement though.

You could also have servers that have a rank cap so that people of higher ranks can't log into them. Call them newbie servers where newbies can fight with other people of their skill level until they get better and graduate to the harder servers.

Snipers can be in a squad. They just create a squad and lock it. I often do this so I can spot things and warn the commander of a possible advance on a position. Also so the commander can warn me of advancing troops so I can get ready to start sniping.

I like the idea of "high-rank-servers" but i dont like the idea of an anti lonewolf setting (look at my stats, most time lonewolf^^). This isnt because i am not a teamplayer but it is because you can rarely do real teamplay with an random squad on a public server anyway. Most people join squads just because of the extra spawnpoint. So would the game be so much better with a whole lot of squads filled with people playing like lonewolfs? no, my attitude is: if you want to play as a team and as a real squad then join one, otherwise stay lonewolf. i hate when i give orders as a squad leader and nobody listens to them...

I think if you did this it would open up a door for stat padders, in a way.  Good players make a second account and go into servers with them and starting schooling all the kids in there with little experience.  This would make it easier for them to get certain badges that others have to work hard for.  I know if I went into a server full of kids who were new(ish) to the game, I'd have expert knife, pistol, and C4 by now.  Just my 2 cents though...

not exactly the best idea. cause in a server i play on it has this thing where squads dont work for mec most of the time. and then they would all be kicked after 10 mins anyway.

I'd like to see added a minimum 1:1 ratio with primary weapon OR minimum 2 SPM (if either condition is true then player passes) just to ensure the players have the basics down.

That is a bug on affecting your particular server -- not a reason to say no to the idea.

The first step to getting people to start playing as squads is to get them to join squads.

No. You forget that those "stat padders" would have a fresh account with none of the other badges. Why would they earn 50,000 points, then make a new account to go get a single badge? They'd be starting all over gain -- they'd be a LOT better than the 'real noobs', but you advance pretty fast in the lower ranks and they'd be out of the noob servers soon enough.

as far as lonewolves go, a good lonewolf can do a lot for a team. i'd say a good player operating by himself is better than a shitty squad any day. since 1.12 a lot of people make squads just so they don't get autoswitched, but aren't one man squads the same thing as lone wolves?

anyway i think stratifying bf2 players by rank would be good, but only optionally. there should be both 'rank restricted' and 'all ranks allowed' servers, and the extent to which the restrictions are in place should be customizable for the server admin.

agreed; usually i do more for my team when alone because i dont have the chance that one of my members will step out in front of a tank to reveal the other 5 of us hoping for it to pass, leading to our demise...
