This prospect is no longer limited to fictional media such as Terminator or Stealth. With developments including the UAV, bomb disarming robots in Iraq, and the mobile machine gun sentries being designed to fight insurgents in Iraq, our wars will be fought by a man behind a keyboard rather than the soldiers on the ground or the pilots in the cockpit.

So...

How far into the future do you foresee a fully robotic military being a reality?

Would we still need the human component on the front line?

Would not having to risk human lives to wage war actually increase violence?

Nope, a fully robotic army will be to expensive to use and loose .... to send a 50 million dollar robot to Iraq to be destroyed by a 20 dollar RPG is bad business when you can get poor people to go for free .....

And how to limit the AI control of the robots is a scientific nightmare, to little and they will fail, to much and ..... well, terminator  anyone ?

You don't need, nor do we have any real insight into how to make, thinking AIs. All you need is for them to be able to idenitfy and kill/destroy/secure stuff. I see no reason why development couldn't start now, it'd just be ludirously expensive and take a while.

It'll be just like Supreme Commander.

i wont dive into all the shit, but i can tell you this. one of the main reasons the USAF doesnt have this shit is because of network issues 30,000 feet in the air. after that is resolved they plan on using a human pilot with a tablet PC or something to that extent to control up to 20 UFV's. they plan on having the human in an AWACS so that he can see what is happening, and control the planes from there. i read it in a popular mechanics, ill try to find a link so im not just talkin out of my ass.

How about countries just start challenging each other to a game of BF2, and call it good?

Crap. First off it rolls so if wars were waged in a Home Depot parking lot it might be effective. Second, scrutinize the weaponry system. The mounted guns bounce to much and do not have a fixation on the target, making it inaccurate. A Chevy Blazer at 25 miles per hour at the feet would knock it over.

If the object in the war is to completely decimate the enemy and nothing else, then yes. (But we were pretty much their after developing nuclear weapons)

I think humankind will be annihilated by cancer due to electromagnetic waves before we have a "fully robotic" military.

However, what good is a fully robotic military if it just fights another fully robotic military?

Some smart arse would find some wonderous computer virus, Jammer or EMP device that could flatten the entire army in one shot.

Never.

That's the argument. You would lack the moral stigma of putting your own human lives at risk, and therefore decrease concern about other human lives.
