Yes and no.  But where does it stop?  Why don't we have Irish American month, Italian American month, Muslim American Month, Mexican American month, etc.?

No we don't need it. At this point its more divisive if anything. Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman made statements a few years ago that said all history should just be history. It doesn't matter if it involves a black person, or a white person. Its still history.

I think it might be important in the US as the amount of shit they had to put up with just to be "equal" in a country that told everyone it was free before 1968 but still had segregation??

Also slavery made the US stupidly wealthy, no denying that. So due to that fact Black history is history or how America got to where it is now.

Blacks are a minority in the US, but there is no white history month. Honestly I don't have a huge problem with it, except that the people who claim it is so necessary are deepening the racial divide even more.

How about we wrap every *month into one celebration, we call it: "I'm a victim of something month". All month long we can bitch complain and huggle each other.

This is deadly turf to be treading because there are still things in the U.S that I cannot comment on intellectually out on the street.  Race/culture and their history is one of those dead zones.  After all, I like to disagree from time to time about things.  Don't we all disagree with something?

In my university years, I read much about Latin America, and the role that race played there. I remember reading about a Mexican author, José Vasconcelos, who wrote of a new cosmic race (mestizo) that would inherit the Earth and essentially eliminate a reason for prejudice.  His theories, though, are racist and suggest some Utopian day, in the year XYZ, when our views regarding any group, creed, religion, color of skin, color of hair, sexual type and education will have been resolved after centuries of think tanks built on the matrix of dialectics, special months, non-profit orgs., and multiculturalism.

Humanity will always find a reason to hate each other; there will be wars, espionage, and conflicts of all types to come.  Heck, Dice and EA games is capitalizing on this notion that we could be in a war in the year 2142.

We can't turn a blind eye to our past, this is true.  Yet, we can move on; we can teach about this stuff objectively, but don't turn it into a cash-driven month.  I was glad to hear that other scholars were infuriated with the notion that people would only consult them for that one month and then forget about them afterwards.

The U.S is a great place to live where we can celebrate our various differences.  Yet, we are citizens of this country and though we may be genetically related to someone living in Africa, Europe, Asia or from all of them, we should first and foremost call ourselves Americans, not African Americans...I do not call myself Euro-American or something to that effect.  I make speak English, but that doesn't make me Australian or British.  After all, if you put 50 people in a room from all over the globe, and someone asked you to identify "racially" the American; it may not be as easy as you think.

I am grieved that the media treats this event as they do Christmas, Halloween, Presidents Day, or Thanksgiving.  All of these celebrations are now built on making money, and do little to really teach anyone about them.  We obviously cannot celebrate every holiday; at some point we have to work.

I voted no on here, yet,  I was not surprised that the vote choices given by MSN-Zogby had none stating dissent.  The "not sure" option seemed to be a label of ignorance.   What happened to a "no" or "I disagree with the month's celebration."

Bill Cosby and and Morgan Freeman share my opinion on the matter.  We should be taught that regardless of who he or she was, something happened and that something should be put in a third person, objective point of view.

Why not just have history courses that give a more balanced coverage of the past?  For example, we rarely study much about South America here in the U.S.

Curriculums are limited enough by time constraints, so there's no logical reason to designate an entire month to one race.

I'm opposed to stuff like this that just serves to tell everyone that any ethnic minorities in a society are different and need their own special 'minority' versions of stuff. As far as I was aware black history in America IS history in America.

I'm glad a statement like mine could so easily be detected as sarcasm. Just shows you how stupid a statement like that sounds.
