I was looking into upgrading my memory and I can't decide what to do. I have 4 slots, two of which are open, and the other two have 2 DDR2-667mhz 5300 512mb chips. I want to get the exact same memory cuz there's no point in going faster if I keep my excisting chips. Or should I go with 2 1g memory chips that are 6400 and ditch the 2 512 chips?

How about add one gig chip for 2gb, or replace the stuff you have to make 2 one gb chips.
My sys requires matching pairs so I have to do 2 chips of equal size.
Why does your system require matching pairs.viper313 wrote:

How should I know? I went to crucial.com and did a sys scan to make sure I had the mem type I thought I had and it said my sys req it. It's a dell by the way. AND NO SPAMING DELL! This machine is the sh!t. I spent 3 g's on it.

Post all your specs so we can be sure please
It probably said that so your RAM could run dual channel, and I'm about 90% sure it's a myth that you have to have identical RAM to do that. Now I also see why you are considering spending so much on RAM.
Why replace with 2 1g chips when I could just add the 2 chips and get 3g total. I have 4 slots.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

Or I could go all out, Hit the lottery and upgrade the mem to the max my sys can handle. Which is 8g!
YOU said your system needed identical sticks. Anything over 2 gb at the moment is almost completely unnecessary.viper313 wrote:

SPECS
Dell XPS 600 with 2.8g dual core chip
Dual 256g GeForce 6800 vid cards.... That's right.... I said 2
20 digital wide screen LCD display
160g HD
1g ddr2 (right now anyways)

xp won't recognize all that, some will be used as virtual memory as far as I know.
Yes 2 512's which are in now and 2 identical chips I want to purchase. Pairs, as in 2, not quadFlaming_Maniac wrote:

6800s are mid/low range card now. Buy a 8800gts sell ram and card and get 2 1gig sticks and you will be in shock by the speed improvementviper313 wrote:

That would be sweet but I can run bf2 and 2142 with all high settings excect 1 on mid now and Im usually one of the first 3 people to get in. But that's a thought. GeForce rocks.The#1Spot wrote:

This is funny cause I just recently bought a monster Dell as well and your specs look a little light mate, 3 gs yeah. Wow you don't get much for your money with them do ya. I was wondering about this linked pairs as well, is it bollocks? I agree with the dude that says you don't need more then two gigs. I've got two gigs and don't ever need anything more. Computer never crashes, I can play BF2, download and listen to iTunes 7 at the same time. Now that's power for ya, but maybe that's the two 3.2ghz processors;)
Looking at that I would either get another gig in two 512 sticks and wait for a system revamp, or get a new video card. Sorry, that computer is pretty mid range at the moment.
Well, you know how comp stuff goes. My comp is about a year old now so when it was new, it was top of the line, but five minutes after i turned it on something new came out.
Ditch the 2x 512MB, replace those slots with 2x 1GB sticks, then add other 1GB sticks as you need them.
Are you accounting for the exchange rate? That 3K is in USD, so it's the equivalent of only around 1.5K GBP.Scardaddy wrote:

Just buy the 2 PC6400 1GB sticks.
Your computer will automatically use the max speed it can, which is the lowest of the two.
This way
A) You have more memory
B) When you do upgrade you can augment the new system with this memory.
You'll use 3GB when you have Adobe Premier Pro, CS2, and Image Ready open at once.

Was just looking at vid cards.... I cant run the 8800 because my power supply doesn't have the necessary cables( dam dell). So If you couldn't get the 8800, what would you get? The 7950?
Would one notice a big difference in gaming and everyday performance if uprgrading from 1GB to 2GB?
if u could, buy a new PSU with better cables and then get a 8800, u will be able to notice the difference. Also i believe that you have to have 2 of the same type and size RAM chips to fully utilize dual channel and anything else is not good enough, so i would suggest buying 2 1gb sticks and getting rid of the old two, or perhaps dual channel can use 2 seperate sets, i dont know. this is just my understanding, so correct me if i am wrong about it

Exactly you can run a higher speed rating on your memory without a hitch.vpyroman wrote:

It depends what type of games you play, and what settings you use. For example, playing bf2 at 1600x1200 with everything full will benefit greatly from upgrading, wheras a game that uses little memory or has small textures and rooms would use less. lol this is just my opinion thoughInspect@hDeck wrote:
