It is very possible for the US to be nuked. A nuke could be sent in through the ports in a cargo container. The fallout would be utter chaos. Just look at the insanity that was caused by hurricanes Reda and Katrina.

Not that it will or won't get passed, but there is a bill that was sent out that I believe already made it throught The House of Reps (leaving it to go through the Senate and for the President to sign/not sign while congress is in session, making it a law) that deals with the Unites States inspecting ALL incoming cargo containers...

This is what im referring to.  What do you think that the political repercussions would be?  Would people become scared to go outside without protection?  Think about what you would do if a nuke went off 30 minutes from your house?

In my opinion I am more afraid of small backpack nukes than huge missiles, mostly because they cannot be seen in advance and people cannot prepare for them.

1).  Though the odds are incredibly low, it is possible and do-able if someone had the right resources.
2).  The blast of nuke that small would do quite a bit of devastation and if placed strategically, would result in long term repercussions;

As far as public response, think the Afghanistan war X10.  No need for a draft.  If 9/11 and Pearl Harbor tell anything about Americans it's that they get very VERY pissed when someone sucker punches them.

Briefcase bombs are more radiation-based than explosion. Dirty bombs would be nasty.

IF a nuke went off in the US, shit would hit the fan, fast.

I think there'd be loads of civil unrest. Heh, funny me and my friend were talking about this earlier today after having watched 24. As for retaliation, our country won't just nuke another random country. Sure we invaded one, but nuking a country that hasn't even declared war on us, only attacking them because radicals from there attacked us, will result in a massive nuclear war. I think if a nuke does go off in our country and we retaliate with one, it could very well lead to a nuclear holocaust. I think it might even be possible for terrorists to attack us with a nuke, but I'm sure many of them are scared to do so if they have any concerns for the future of their organizations.

Yeah, it would. You would hear it a long, long way away. I doubt you'd feel it though. But if the wind was blowing the wrong way you might end up dead anyway.

You all are thinking too small an improper built nuke cant destroy much. A properly built one devestates an area as large as a whole entire city. Not to forget the acid rain etc that will follow. Still people would live on yeah. Now imagine a nuke blown up near or in a Trojan powerplant. The US has over 70 powerplants in total each would be as good a target as the next. Blowing up such a powerplant could easily knock out a large amount of the population. It was feared that during 9/11 one of the aircraft would have hit the Trojan just out of new york. This its self would kill tens of millions of people wipe out the whole entire surrounding area. A lot would die instantly while others would die from diseases and fallout. Some of the next generation will be mutated missing body parts abnormalities etc. Such a thing could happen to any country with a nuclear powerplant just imagine if more then 1 bomb got snuck in.

Such an attack however would be an atrocity against man kind, but I guess it has happened before just not on that much of a large scale. The US isn't invincible, it is like every other country and has its weaknesses to. However since WW2 no one has been stupid enough to use a nuke. Lets hope in the future no one is that stupid. My guess the next biggest thing. A nuclear fission bomb, we are working on fission reactors and have managed to heat up particles at 80 000 degrees celcius for under a second. This is 8 times the temperature of the sun. This figure is however old its like from 2003 the main goal is to get to 100 000 degrees celcius. Imagine what such a weapon could do it could probably even wipe out a whole entire large country. Something 10 times hotter then the sun would definately leave a large hole somewhere on the planet and probably cause some sort of a freeze over. With that sort of a weapon who needs more then 1 bomb?

Lets just hope humanity has learned what happens when we want large expolosive power from Hiroshima and Nagasaki or our future is grim.

Yknow, realistically, if the US is nuked, and its found to be some muslim nation involved, there will probably be a day of mourning...and then the next day said nation will end up being a glass parking lot.
