Intel CEO Paul Otellini has stated that Intel now has working samples of its upcoming processors codenamed “Penryn.” Not only do they have the processors working on test equipment but Otellini states that Intel have booted Penryn processors on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Linux, and Apple Mac OS-X operating systems. Intel's Daniel Snyder went on to say: These are good indicators of how healthy our 45 nm manufacturing and future product designs are looking so far as we plan to begin manufacturing production in the second half of the year ramping to three (!) 300mm factories in 2008.

Obviously this does not bode well for AMD as they have yet to bring forth their new Barcelona architecture processors that will hopefully showcase AMD’s recent move to 65nm process.

Yeh they expect to be shelved late 07 IIRC. Well ahead of schedule! (Not normal for us to be saying those words in this industry...)

heck yes, just in time for my CD to mature so I can by myself a new rig! I probably wont get a Penryn, but the the C2D's are gonna be like so much cheaper.

Just wait til we get down to 22nm.

Where do we go from there?

Is it even possible to get smaller than 22nm?

Don't expect too huge performance steps from penryn. It's only a conroe shrink.

Physics will only allow technology to be so small and fast to the point where it would be useless to go smaller

Exactly what I'm thinking... they have it roadmapped out until 22nm... but what comes after that? I think that once we get there we need to find a new way to process and send data.

Typically, thinner manufacturing process may allow Intel to crank up clock-speed of the chips, enlarge its cache sizes, reduce power consumption and make them cheaper to make.

So I've heard...lol

That's where quantum computing comes in.

quantum computing and optical computers.  Oh yes, motherboards will have frikin' lasers attached to their heads.

Well thats true with any process shrink really...

But what happens when you can't get any smaller, faster, etc.?

yeah, it's called optical computing.

We are no where near this...lol Unless perhaps you work for NASA.

Something that is supposedly more awesome then Conroe and has higher clock speeds.

Any ideas on a likely release time frame?

Intel already released a road map, it comes out in 2008 Q3 I think.
