I know in these forums for what ever reason we have some Anti-Wikipedia folks, despite it being the most democratic encyclopedia online. I don't know if you are aware of this but China has been for sometime trying to put pressure on Wikipedia to censor it's "politically sensitive" content. Wikipedia has stood it's ground where other larger companies like Google, Yahoo, and even Microsoft have buckled.

Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia founder), "We stand for freedom of information, and for us to compromise I think would send very much the wrong signal: that there's no one left on the planet who is willing to say, "You know what? We're not going to give up".

For many years now the vast majority of the Chinese population has been piss poor and uneducated but with the upturn in the Chinese economy and a growing middle class people will want a greater say in their own destiny, so it is only a matter of time before the Chinese people get more freedoms but the right to vote will be a long time in coming I think.

Definitely. Basically, the Chinese government is fighting the inevitable, and they're going to go down kicking and screaming when the people actually force the government to represent them.

By then, it will truly be a "People's Republic", but now, it's just a corporate dictatorship.

I have a B.A. in International Economics with an emphasis on 3rd World industrialization, so yes, I know plenty about China.

People were eating grass in the 60's having endured decades of war and poverty.
Finally, I implore all of you to not judge China on Western terms. It may be hard, as Western life is all you guys may know, but try. People in China think, logicalise, and have a completely different mentality to those in the West. The government arguably censors info to prevent social unrest. It may seem a flimsy excuse, but with 1.3 billion people, and highly distinct regions, anything could spark civil war. Literally, one village in some parts of the country cannot understand anything said in the next village, say 20 miles away. During the Cultural Revolution of the 60-70's, tank factory workers drove there products straight off teh production line, to fight the workers from teh machine gun plant. And they were supposedly fighting for the same cause. COuld you imagine differing interests?
