He's paranoid about viruses and hackers, so to finally make him reason I'll need your help, so guys is it possible to get a virus infection or that a hacker can get into your PC while playing bf2 IF you disable your antivirus? Now, I know a firewall will prevent hackers but how about viruses and spyware? will they be able to get into our pc IF you disable your Anti Virus and have no programs running besides the system tasks and BF2? And why. Thanks a lot guys, the antivirus seems to give him lag (Norton) but he doesn't listen to me to turn it off, or his anti spyware.

A firewall will stop most hackers from getting into your PC.

A virus checker will scan your hard drive to see if you have any viruses.

So, if a firewall is running 24/7 then how is a virus going to get onto your PC?
Virus checkers are fine if you have no firewall, attempt to open emails from people you dont know, put in discs from people you dont know or whatever - but the firewall will stop them from being transferred over the internet.
If he is really that paranoid - then get him to run his anti virus before playing BF2, turn off the anti virus and then run it again afterwards.

I've been running with absolutely no protection (not even that crap that comes with windows) for about a year now. No virus's. If he's a safe searcher and doesn't just go download  happy on random sites he has never been on, he should be right. And i seriously doubt anything should happen whilst playing BF2....

There IS potential, but I don't think any guy will send you a virus through BF2.

He should not be turning it off anyways though, viruses can come through even if you are not surfing the net.

If your friend is that paranoid and they end up getting a virus, i bet your friend will say they got it from BF2

Do you really need to disable the AV?

I have heard of people having to close endless processes, rebooting routers, etc etc, whereas i jump on and play no problems :S

However, if you need to dissable the AV, then there shouldn't be any problems, keep the firewall on, and do a scheduled scan every 1-2 weeks, and nothing will go wrong

Must you be an asshole about it? he's my best friend, a bit paranoid but not an idiot, he's far from being one, however you on the other hand instead of being helpful you go as a 12yo insulting, and that makes you an idiot.

Tell him to buy a good enough PC that will allow him to run AV and play BF2 smoothly.

Tell your friend to get a router, that will provide a decent firewall for his needs.

Unloading the AV, as well as removing resident spyware killers and guards, while you/he plays BF2 will not suddenly make a PC vunerable. Nothing will change, yes its safe to play bf2 without them.  If you/he really needs them then re-enable them after playing.

I never have my virus killer loaded, If I need to scan I just do it manually.

Yes it was possible to load a virus/torjan with bf2.
because there was an exploit in the JPEG imagés, those image's where uploaded in the map of  BF2.

I'm talking about the server image you get. when loading the game for multiplayer session.

Yes, but I think BF2 is a low-risk activity. It's probably safer than reading email or surfing the web. An intrusion isn't more likely when you're playing BF2 than when you're not.

A firewall will try to prevent hackers but no firewall is perfect. Viruses and spyware would have to get by the firewall but vulnerabilities in the firewall, system tasks or BF2 could let them in. And there are probably unpatched vulnerabilities in Windows' system tasks.

I think keeping the anti-virus on while playing is a tiny bit safer than turning it off. I turn mine off though, and keep my firewall on.

The risk of this is tiny. Absolutely tiny.

Some of us have to do this to get adequate performance. All non-essential processes should be disabled to get the best from your rig.

Thank God I ditched Norton AV, that mother sucked RAM like a coke fiend; even turned itself back on sometimes during a game!

Many people have said this to me.

Its a gut feeling. If i could be stuffed (which i'm not) I would install some anti-spyware and run a scan. But, i can't be stuffed!

Why do you say that? The Blaster and Sasser worms come to mind.

If your still having trouble convincing your friend suggest a program called Drive Shield.  Basically when you start the program it reboots your computer and starts it up in read only mode, you could delete the registry, format the hard drive then one reboot and the computers back to how it was. I used to use it but found it too over the top for what i needed.

It can be expensive but if he's really paranoid it may work because yes your computer may get infected while playing (not very likely but i have seen it happen in the past), so give it a reboot and then there's nothing to worry about.   You don't even need to have av running while playing.
