c) His dogged bravery in the face of overwhelming adversity, where external powers continue to try and impose their will and force Cuba to conform to their norms.
That's the dumbest set of criteria I've ever seen. Just because you keep oppressing people for some ass-backwards cause doesn't make you a good man. Fidel Castro is just a stubborn old jackass who refuses to accept that Communism has failed. So many people criticize Bush for being stubborn, yet you praise Castro for basically being stubborn.
You're missing the point. He's committed to being stubborn!
He's committed to serving what he believes to be the best interests of his own people, stemming from the Cuban people's victory over the forces of Fulgencio Batista, corruption and international expolitation of the Cuban people and resources. While I will always condemn curbs on the freedom of speech I will say that the egalitarian society created in Cuba by Castro and co, which I visited last October, is a fine caring/sharing society.  The impression I got was that most of the people of Cuba believe in the communist system so even if it were democratic communism would still reign.

It's like this: I admire a great many things about USA despite the fact that George W. Bush is a money/resource/influence/power-greedy, Israel-beholden, bloodthirsty, borderline retard oligarch who shows little genuine regard for the security or wellbeing of his own people, especially those of the poorer variety, or the wellbeing of people who don't even live in USA.

I think he was a cunt and has mended his ways. He has watered down a lot of the rhetoric and hardline stances against dissenters in the past 20 years. The cuntishness in the aftermath of the overwhelmingly popular revolution was an unfortunate symptom of the international effort to crush the revolution in its infancy. The problem was that the regime had to adopt a siege mentality because of the rest of the world trying to impose their will on Cuba. So it's as much the fault of the west as it is the fault of Castro.

PS I hardly think free dental care, health care, free education and a guaranteed food supply for all citizens is exactly 'treating his people like shit'.

Fidel himself stated that if they didn't like it they could get on rafts to Florida if they want, he wouldn't stop them.

That's funny because Binyamin Netanyahu is one of my candidates for worst human being ever. And strangely him and Nelson Mandela would be polar opposites: one who fought apartheid and one who supported apartheid. Rather contradictory selection.

We do have a reciprocal visa waiver scheme with the US so no, it shouldn't be too tough.

You are obviously going to think that living in Florida - where all the oligarchs and corrupt landed classes fled to when the revolution beat Batista out of the country. I was in Cuba - to a majority of them Che Guevara is like a God, along with José Martí. I heard some dissenting voices but most people there are supportive of the principles of communism and a great many have genuine adoration for Fidel. I do think many Cubans would like Cuba to be opened up a bit more but of course the US embargo kind of prevents that.

Pieter Willem Botha - South Africa - who started to bring about reforms...despite what most non South Africans believe he was NOT hard line....this leads into no.2

Frederik Willem De Clerk - South Africa - who finalised the above mentioned reforms and opened up voting rights to the previously disenfranchised South Africans.

Nelson Mandela - South Africa - who maintained an absolutely gob smaking amount of integrity and personal courage in the face of adversity - and after his magnanimous outlook on peace in South Africa. Unlike his successor who seems to be slowly heading in the same direction as Mugabe & Amin.

John Howard - Australia - whose fiscal policies have turned the Australian Govt Deficit of $10billion into a regular & large surplus.

Margaret Thatcher - the best Britain had to offer since Churchill.

No.5 is my Grandfather - John Matthews (deceased - member of the South African Communist Party) - he spent 15 years in a South African prison - a founding member of Mandela's ANC party.

OMG! Thatcher was a BAD BAD politician, you ppl never heard of her attempt to destroy the working class, mass unemployment, and a movement away from Social ideals towards Individual capitalist wealth.  "There is no such thing as society" - Thatcher.

I can partly understand why some Americans may think Thatcher was good, due to lack of information; but anyone British should realise how bad her time was, and how much everyone rejoiced when she was OUT! Even now years later, Brits still talk about how she was one of the worst things to happen to this country.

As far as current Politicians, I can't say I respect any of them, I would like to see The Liberal Democrats in power, however we'll see if the ideals of rhetoric match the policies in action -- it'll be a first.

And finally... Tony Blair is a moron, he made have had some ideals, but he has been corrupted by power, and responsibility; and by his too close relationship with the Moronic American Government.  I would be so embarrased by George W Bush, if I was American.

I really can't see how anyone can respect Gough Whitlam - look at the result of his social experiment.
He set about saving the Australian Aborigines by giving them money for nothing (according to some elders I know it was described to them as "sit down money")
nowadays most of the Aborigines in my town sit around all day drunk out of their minds - unemployable & mostly uneducated. The Labour Govt's (Whitlam, Hawk & Keating) gave more and more away - the only result being the destruction of the Aboriginal peoples self respect & future.

Alice Springs was recently described as the murder capital of the world (per capita of population) and is currently one of the places Doctors & Nurses come to get experience in stabbing trauma.

1.George Weiss. I have got drunk with this guy a few times. Well actually I got drunk, he doesn't drink. He tried to get me to stand in one of the seats he was funding. He is spending his entire fortune on "Making Politicians History"  I did a search on google for a link and was shocked to see he is on wikipedia, lol. He is a good man.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_George_Weiss
2. Clinton. Whatever Americans think of Clinton, he is the only American Leader to visit Northern Ireland and he lent on our Politician  when they needed lent on.
3. Ian Paisley. Hate him with vengeance, but I still respect him. He was or local MLA, now his half witted son has taken over his seat. He has single handedly controlled the direction of Northern Ireland politics for the past 30 or 40 years. I have meet him on planning issues on several occasions, which he was very affective at. Also, my Sisters man is from Dublin and was having trouble getting settled up here, transferring his qualifications in the public sector of the Republic to Northern Ireland. He talked to Paisley and it was sorted within a week. A good politician at local level.
4. Gerry Adams. For skillfully steering the republican movement away from violence to the ballot box, while still keeping our dignity.
5.  Hugo Chavez. For trying to make his country a socialist state and stopping the outward flow of the countries resources into the coffers of American big business. Not perfect, but it will bring the massive gap between rich and poor down eventually.

Neither, I wasn't old enough for either.
Are you rich / upperclass, and despise the working class, seeing them as lazy "dole sponger"

I've never been on the dole and probably never will, but thats because I don't need to be, I'm educated and have a good, but that doesn't mean that I think we shouldn't have a wellfair system, privatised healthcare, or an increase in personal wealth above the benefit of Society.  I'm also guessing your a Conservative, which is worrying enough as it is.
