With all this talk about WWII I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone that the anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge is tomorrow (December 16, 1944.).

The "bulge" refers to the "dent" the Germans initially put into the Allies' line of advance, as seen in maps presented in newspapers of the time

At the end of the battle the forces included over a million men, about 560,000 Germans, 640,000 Americans (more than fought at Gettysburg) and 55,800 British.

The official US account lists 80,987 American casualties, while other estimates range from 70,000 to 104,000. British losses totaled 1,400. The German High Command's official figure for the campaign was 84,834 casualties, and other estimates range between 60,000 and 100,000.

The German losses in the battle were critical in several respects: the last of the German reserves were now gone; the Luftwaffe had been broken; and the German army in the West was being pushed back. Most importantly, the Eastern Front was now ripe for the taking. In the East, the German army was unable to halt the Soviet juggernaut. German forces were sent reeling on two fronts and never recovered.

American:
89,987 casualties
(19,276 dead,
23,218 captured or missing,
47,493 wounded)

British:
201 dead,
1400 wounded and missing

Nazi Germany
84,834 casualties
(15,652 dead,
27,582 captured or missing,
41,600 wounded)

Wasn't the Bulge the Germans last ditch attempt at pushing the Allies back ? Im pretty sure their plan was to capture Oil depots along the way, which was absolutely vital for their advance.

Id recomend reading Citizen Soldiers by Steven E Ambrose, it chronichles the battle quite well.

1 month non the less.

If you want to see some more staggering numbers with regards to another German offensive look up the siege of Leningrad.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_L … ad_of_Life Most of those are civilians due to starvation. It was truly sick, there were some the went to cannibalism. I remember watching a history channel documentary on it. Some of the survivors that were children at the time were hidden and not allowed on the streets so that they could remain safe from the others.

Yes amongst other things. Between the two fronts the Germans had depleted all of their reserves. It was a crushing blow that cost many lives on both sides.

Hitler initially wanted to push the Allies back all the way back to the coast, capturing the port of Antwerp, and cutting off the rest of the Allied divisions to the north.

I went on vacation to Europe, and managed to stop by Bastogne for 1 day.  The area is amazing...... there are actually still foxholes in the woods, especially in the woods on the hill above Foy.  It's awesome... if you're ever in the area, check it out, you won't be disappointed.

The 101 says they didnt need him, I dont think he rescued the 101st but he saved a lot of them from being wounded, captured or killed.

Isn't the movie (and video game...and book) "A Bridge too Far" about the same operation? (Operation Market Garden - correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not up to date on my WW2 History)

Market Garden was a "failed" airborne invasion of Holland.

The Bulge was the last German Offensive of the war

After christmas and all the food it brings we'll all be fighting our own battle of the bulge.

I had no idea the US lost so many men in that battle!

True dat, although Market Garden included both a huge-ass airborne operation that lasted for days, as well as the British XXX Corps ground forces moving up "hells highway"

Arnhems also a real cool town to visit if you're ever in the area.  In Oosterbeek, the old division headquarters for the British airborne troops during the operation is now the museum.
