Hi,

I am looking at getting a laptop for christmas, and the decision has pretty much boiled down to how the CPU's compare.

One has a 1.6 Ghz Core Duo (NOT Core 2 Duo), and the
other has a 2.0 Ghz Pentium M.

I have looked on google for a comparison between Pentium M's and Core Duo's but it is minefield of Core 2 Duo reviews......

Any help appreciated (or even karma'ed maybe )

Pentium M is the early type of mobile processors,

Core Duo is more recent, but not as the Core 2 Duo.

Ill say, get the Core Duo.

1.6 Ghz Core Duo me think's, pretty sure they have higher mhz over the M's to, and what jcurts said, M is the older one, soooo I'd say the core duo.  Got a link to the actual system's you are comparing?

well the first is:

2GHz cpu - pentium m
100GB hard drive
128mb DEDICATED graphics card - ATI radeon X300
1GB of ram
15.4 inch widescreen monitor
built in a, b and g wifi
built in bluetooth
4 usb 2.0 ports
1 firewire port
External monitor port
Pcmcia slot for upgrades
And it can be pluged into tv's
SD card reader built in - for camera memory
DVD and CD burner

the other is any new laptop for $1350

(the I am looking at is this one, the $1328 one)

Add the X1400 to the second one you are thinking of and youll have a great system. If you can swing it, upgrade the ram.

BTW, is there a reason for the dell?

Is it the financing? If its not, I can point you to an acer that will kill it for about the same or a couple hundred less.

Ill give you some acer model numbers and You can find them at your usual places you would shop there. Some models are a year older BUT they kick behind. Ill find a couple and you can go from there. I have experiance with One in particular, and its going for almost half the price here than it was a year ago. It beats up on my desktop something aweful. AND the laptop is running 59 processes from the factory! LOL Its not a pretty sight seeing it whoop my desktop LOL.

Ill post my findings as soon as i can today.

performance wise core duos are usually 18% slower than core 2 duos clock for clock. also they are missing 64 bit support (which pentium m's also dont have). i would defenetely go for a dual core cpu (its really worth it, stay away from single cores. even though they might sore a bit higher in benchmarks they are crushed when it comes to real world performance, because you always have something running in the background that gives you temporary stutters)
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Core Duo, definitely.  Dual cores give you an unspeakable advantage over single cores.

And that would be...?
I would not base your decision on getting two cores, unless you plan on running games for the next 5 years, in which case I would be more worried about your graphics card.

The Dell you posted for $1328 isnt enough for todays games, it has onboard shared memory... scratch the Dell notebook, go to www.ibuypower.com and check things out there, compare, check finances Im sure you'll find much better laptops for $1300

this was the first laptop i clicked on ibuypower.com Battalion 101 HEL-80 notebook, as you can see it has an Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7200 2x 2.0Ghz 4MB Cache http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/conf … px?mid=188

its $100 dollars more than that Dell Inspiron notebook, and probably 5x better

dual cores is definitely a must have with laptops.  crappy programs like itunes can hog an entire processor, and without the second one on hand you'll suffer.
