if we are talking the facts and not everyones opinion, then avtomat kalishnikova takes the cake. though my opinion would definitly go with either a garand or a karibiner 98.......

The M14. I saw this video on youtube about the M14 EBR "enhanced battle rifle". It looked awesome.

Bleh. StG-44 makes it sound cooler.
It also makes more sense if you want to distinguish it from SMGs.

I've shot one in Vietnam, last Christmas. It's has quite a lot of kick to it...

*That's the same place I first heard the M14. Unfortunately I couldn't shoot one because there wasn't enough time.

The AK-74 would be a real treat if the 47 had too much recoil for you. The 5.45x39 cartridge produces next to no felt recoil. Its an HV round unlike the 7.62, but it's a nice performer.

In terms of all factors, the Ak-47 and you all know it.
quantity and proliferation doesn't make something 'the best'.
At its peak and even now, it was very accurate and powerfull, plus the reliability.  Now add that to service and the production of the rifle.
I'm not saying I know what the "best" rifle is, but the AK-47 is not it.  I hate them.  Accurate and powerful?  The 7.62x39mm has less power than a 7.62x51mm and they're usually so run down and beat up that my pistol is more accurate.  Note that due to the large caliber and small powder size that the round tends to fall short of any long range targets.

I carried a M4 and a M24 on most missions.  I wouldn't say that either one of them was "the best" rifle ever, because if that were true I wouldn't carry both.  Each rifle typically has it's own function and are simply tools for the job.  It's like saying, "What's the best wrench?"

Here is a fun pic though...  My deer hunting rifle (Remington 700) is the one with the wood stock.  You also see a HK-G3, a M24 w/ a slightly dif scope, a keg w/ tap (wait, there are two kegs), and the handle of a revovler of some type on the keg.

After 4 pages, I think the OP got what he wanted out of the thread....

And for the record, I've made my points as to what the "best rifle" is, and it aint the one I just posted

The best rifle of all time is the AK47. Its been around for 60 years now. It is as reliable as a rifle can get. Freezing weather, sand anything. Consists of very few parts. Can be assembled in seconds. Its simplicity is its greatest strenght along with its reliabilty. Thats why probubly around 75% of the world's armys are armed with AK's or variants of an AK.

It has the heavy barrel.  The only dif between that one and the one I was issued is the scope on it.  It's a crappy pic, because it was my camera phone.  I want to get some professional pics taken of all my guns if I ever get the $$.

the m14 has been arounds since the 60's it was smutherd for main battle rifel use during vientam, but some carried it, Special forces have used it since. Some marine snipers are issued m14 sniper rifles. so the m14 has been around for about 45 years

Pretty much an M16 with improvements. And a standard 4X magnification scope, and full auto / semi,

I think not...

the C7 is just an M16A2 with a few difference specifications.

It'd be like a country adopting a HBAR 1-9 twist 4150 barrel rather than the Govt Profile 1-7 twist 4150 which comes standard on the M16A2 and calling it an improvement. Sure it'd help hold accuracy for sustained fire while creating a more harmonically accurate weapon while being cheaper at the same time requiring less machining, but it'd be heavier for the troops to carry... and take longer to cool down. EDIT:: forgot to mention the twist rate of the 1-9 would allow it to effectively fire a lighter projectile whereas the 1-7 can fire a heavier one.

These rifles are like tinker toys and can be adapted to any spec you want. Improvements in one area, create deficiencies in other areas.

The C7 is a spec, as is the M16A2. Improvement? not really. Change of spec for the given application? yes.
