Turn mine off at night unless I'm downloading overnight, always turn off monitor when I'm not @ comp.

I leave mine on, on my old ISP where my bandwidth was metered (I had a 50GB limit per month), between 12 midnight and 7am I could use all I wanted and it didn't add to my monthly limit so I left downloads going overnight. Also electricity is cheaper at night (about 1/3 the price) which is another reason to do my downloading while I sleep (and it doesn't waste my time while I'm awake either).

I leave my router on, but it shares my connection between 4 or 5 people.  I turn my main PC off as its in my bedroom and I like actually getting sleep

Only when I'm downloading something, although periodically when I go to do something in the day and know I'll be returning within 1-3 hours ill turn the monitor off and leave it running...

Was actually curious, here mine.

well....i must admit i fall victim to leaving on my PC all the time. Mostly due to trying to keep a good positive ratio on most bittorrent sites.

On the other hand i also leave it on all the time since i kinda like to feel like i'm giving back to the world so i participate in the World Community Grid.

Don't really have a better reason to leaving my computer running than that.

I never turn off my machine and it outlasts every other machine I've come across. Most night I am rendering animations so I'll have my CPU at 100% as well. Apart from quarterly Windows XP reinstalls. My machine runs like clockwork.

[b]liquidat0r[b/], how do you get you "Local Area Connection Status" window to show bytes rather than packets?

I leave my 73 Buick with the catalytic converter hollowed out running 24/7 incase i need to go the store...
when i get thirsty from burning leaves and tires and old paint in my back yard... theres a stream nearby so when i have to go it only takes a second... thats sort of saving energy..huh?  And yes i turn my comp off and on periodically throughout the day... I dont leave it on all the time... The argument for keeping it on i have read is that the electronic components expand and contract from the heat and turning the comp off and the subsequent cooling...  shortening component life... ?   Standby and hibernation only use a fraction of the power from what this site says

1/2 and 1/2 here.  A few machines stay on all night, but some are powered off unless needed.  2 servers, 1 NAS, and 1 desktop are always running.  Monitors are off unless needed, and all are LCD for whatever that's worth.  Mostly, I'm just not turning off RAID arrays.  The Windows server only gets rebooted for updates, and once every other blue moon, I need to reboot the Linux server.  My personal desktop has been up for 17 days, and even then, was probably rebooted for a patch.

It's been my experience at home and at work that powering off machines that typically run for long periods of time is a bad idea.  I've seen too many power supplies and RAID arrays work fine until they're powered off, and then they never come back.  I'll burn a little juice and say no thanks to those surprises.  A glorified game console is one thing, but business is something else entirely.

My aquarium hobby eats a lot more juice than the home computing anyway.  Something around 1000 watts, just for lights, 12 hours a day.  Then the heaters and pumps and such.  I haven't thrown a wattmeter on it in a long time, so I have no idea how much juice I actually use.

I'm fairly environmentally friendly, but those are two areas that I don't compromise on.

I leave mine all almost continually. The main reason being that when I am not using it directly, SETI@home does its' thing. I've clocked up a ton of hours for them.

I didn't bother reading all the posts so forgive me if it was brought up already. I was told from a reliable source that turning off your PC every night and turning it on every morning can reek havok on your power supply. Is there any truth to this?

Like porn? (This goes for all the other peeps who said something similar too)((Not that I'm saying there is something wrong with that..))

I turn my off every time I leave it for more than say 30 minutes.  I have a laptop and a friend who has a similar setup warped his IKEA desk from leaving it on.  I'm afraid my Wal-Mart version won't hold.
