While the way that the federal government holds school systems for ransom with things like funding just proves the necessity of separating the federal government from education, I would also argue that JROTC is a sensible and worthwhile program that San Francisco has unsurprisingly overreacted to.

It's San Fran, what can ya do?

Unfortunately nothing is happening in a vacuum. All of this is connected somewhere along the line. If schools screw up then the community, states and nations suffer. If government stands by and does nothing they get whacked by one or the other political parties or various special interest groups. Without Federal money filtering down in various ways and/or directly to schools many would fall apart (and did) at least in the non-affluent communites and then the educational divide broadens. Some money filters through state and local programs still benefitting the schools.

I think the Feds, State and local gov't need to be in the process somewhere setting standards and monitoring activites or many of our schools will wander off in eccentric partisan directions which is really the same problem as having religion in schools.

Keep politics out of schools not governments!

100 years ago SF alienated the Asian students and didn't allow them to attend school. Now 100 years later they are making another big mistake. I say take away their Federal Money, and wait till they come back begging for it.

No, just discouraged military recruiters from coming to high school and college campuses here in the City.  There hasn't been an enforced ban just yet, but this gives the schools the ability to do so should any infractions occur on the recruiters part.  It was passed because of the predatory tactics that some recruiters take as early as high school to get people to sign up.

The schools have set up scholarships and alternatives to recruitment as part of the bill.  We don't agree with recruitment in schools, and therefore have taken measures to set up safeguards against it.

i still don't see how they're any worse than any other type of recruiter, i was hounded by the likes of the peace corp and the like long after i got the military off my back. after all, if you can enter the military as a teen, what are they supposed to do, wait til you're 21 to recruit. i guess it just goes back to my "same rules for everyone" creed, i doubt greenpeace or PETA would be booted off campus in SF, no matter how "predatory" their tactics might be.

I've never heard of any recruiter other than the military on a high school campus, ever.
And you can't join the military when you're a teen in highschool, that's why they have the JROTC to recruit students before they can even join.

You can't join until you've graduated, but you can be stalked as early as they feel is necessary.  Since 16, i got calls on the phone, visits on campus, and mailers for my junior and senior years.  When you're trying to make decisions (i had decided to go to SDSU and do air force rotc, and play volleyball), they're right there with their contracts baiting and deceiving you giving an unfair amount of pressure.  I know because I disregarded my college entrance by enlisting.  And to be fair, it's still a good deal, even if they don't lie.  Nothing wrong with being in the service..but the predatory activity is not ethical.  No wonder it's being rejected in many places (other than SF).

never heard of sports recruiters? and i know they're not called recruiters at job fairs, but isn't that what they're doing? sports recruiters are the most aggressive creatures this side of badgers and trial lawyers, don't see anyone rushing to kick them out.

I think it's BS. I'm in MCJROTC here are my school, and I love it. We have a recruiter from our district that comes a couple days a week. He's a cool guy, but he only talks to seniors about enlisting, and that's only if they come to him. ROTC is a great program. Neither of the instructors preach pro-war and non-gay. We actually have more than a few gay cadets and anti-war ones, but that doesn't stop them from being in the program.

Maybe there should be corporate recruiters waving faux paychecks around high school, encouraging students to get educated so they can get paid more than a McDonald's wage.

BAN JROTC in San Francisco, yup, sounds about par for the course. My only question is: I wonder what took'em so long  ?

It depends. Air Force prays for peace so they dont have to leave their apartments, I mean barracks, and deploy to lesser quality living standards. Marines on the other hand, get very tired of cleaning their weapons for nothing.
