I wonder did the Lonely Planet guide mention how you shouldn't go near Northern Ireland with a barge pole for the entire month of July? It pisses me off - if I go home to Donegal for a weekend during July the coach has to detour around Northern Ireland adding about two hours to my journey just to make sure it doesn't get stoned/hijacked/burned out/etc.
Not to mention the mass emigration out of N.Ireland into Donegal for the duration of the hostilities cultural expression..
For those of us who don't understand, could you elaborate on this little gathering?

Okay, so what is the reason for this gathering?  I mean those photographs just look like any town after their team loses a soccer match.

Basically it's like this:

1) Britain invades Ireland 800 years ago.
2) Ireland spends 800 years trying to get the Brits out through the use of force.
3) The Irish lose a particularly decisive battle, the Battle of the Boyne, in 1690 against British colonisers led by the Dutch king William of Orange.
4) The Orange Order is founded, a sectarian anti-Catholic (anti-Irish basically) Protestant fraternity organisation, 'celebrating' Protestant coloniser/invader culture and identity in Northern Ireland.
5) The Orange Order 'celebrates' the victory of the Battle of the Boyne by marching down the main streets of towns and, oddly, through predominantly Catholic housing estates where they are not wanted during the month of July and specifically on July 12th. They bang drums and act all triumphant as they sneer at the 'untermensch' they oppress and subjugate whilst hurling insults and abuse at them and singing sectarian songs.
6) Ireland wins independence from Britain through war but the casualty in all this is the six counties that today make up Northern Ireland. The Brits draw up an arbitrarily selected border to try and keep a foothold on this green isle. They call it 'Northern Ireland' and have it recongnised as an independent country.
7) A gerrymandered 'Protestant government for a Protestant people' is started in Northern Ireland (despite the fact that 40% of the population are ethnically Irish catholics). The human rights of the abandoned/trapped Irish in the north are trampled upon at every opportunity.
8) Protestants start burning catholics out of their homes while Catholics march for their human rights. The Provisional IRA is born to defend Catholic communities.
9) All hell breaks lose in Northern Ireland for approximately 25 years.
10) The Orange Order continues to demand the right to march through Catholic areas where they are not wanted so they can act all triumphant. This leads to an annual month of carnage and violence every July that brings the north to a complete stand still.

Joking aside. Ireland is a wonderful, mystical, friendly country. I can't see myself ever wanting to live anywhere else, even though it would freeze the nuts off you 9months of the year.

The cold wouldn't bother me.  It gets rather cold where I'm at in the winter.  The Salt Lake valley is about 5,000 feet (1520 meters) above see level.

@Jahman: I'd quite like to live in Ireland; you do have a large amount of things that could be considered mountains don't you? I'd quite like to be back in a country where I can mountainbike properly. Plus good beer!

When I remembered that sniper sign in the north this evening I went straight onto BF2142 and got myself a neat Sniper_At_Work account.

while it is a bit of a laugh, please also remember  during these 25 years, 3,585 men, women, and children were murdered in Northern Ireland and around 40,000 people injured.   The mural you are having fun with commemorates the murder of 13 civilians by British Soldiers, their only crime was they were Catholic.  These are important things for you to remember, some of us can never forget..
