Obligatory 'troops are killing the planet' post done and over with, so nobody else has to. Now for a ham sandwich and a history video.

Dont come in here and be an asshole, I created this thread this morning so that people can remember their friends/family members they have lost, and so people can be grateful to military veterans who may or may not still be living today.  You dont have to be a fan of this day, just dont be a bitch about it and show some respect.

I always honour the veterans.
We call it Remembrance Day here in Canada.
Here's a thought that has been with me all year: are we now at the time when there is no one left alive who fought in Great War/World War I?  It seems very wierd to me, like a day I thought would never come.  I mean, the whole reason we even have this day on November 11 is because of that war, right?  And we just assume "everyone remembers the First World War."  But now I meet more and more people who don't know anything about it, and there is no one left to give first-hand accounts of that horror.
I suppose there was a moment, probably in the 1950s, when Americans suddenly realized there was no one left from the Civil War, and it felt wierd to them.
Anyway, I want to wish all reading this a good Remembrance Day, and I want to say thanks to those who serve.

Thats almost sad that youve met people who dont know anything about the first world war.  Did they not learn about it in school?  There are very few WWI vets around.  An article I read earlier said that there were less than 25 in the U.S.  That is a very small amount when taking into account the population, and the amount of people worldwide that fought in the war.

I imagine that it will be the same in the next 20 years or so, where WWII vets will be in the same position.

in flanders fields museum is a very interesting place to visit if you havn't already, that and other parts of belgium completely changed my views on war
it takes a serious fanatic of war not to think there should be peace for at least a while after visiting the museum or seeing all those shell holes

I was addressing you, I didnt realize you were being sarcastic, it just came off as a disrespectful comment.  To me it did, maybe not everyone.  Sorry for not taking the time to insert an apostrophe into my contractions.  I never do, because Im lazy I guess.  Just because I dont contract the words does not show ignorance, laziness yes, but ignorance or stupidity no.

Ironically, I'm glad you were addressing me, otherwise I'd have just been blowing hot air as you were. It's alright to be a bit lazy, but I can still make fun of you for it if you misinterpret things like that.

The treaty of Versailles was a document in which they hoped to end all wars, sadly that wasn't the case. That treaty was signed on the 11th minute, 11th hour, 11th day and the 11th month.

God bless the souls who have died for our great country, let them rest in peace for eternity.

The ToV, along with the League of Nations, both spawned from WWI and both complete failures.

The Treaty was never going to work, to ask any country to surrender it's national pride and then completely decimate it's economy every year was an act of barbarism only to be equalled by the people that it caused (read Nazi's).

The LON was the most self centred pile of ignorants as well, the idea of stating that the nation that at that time needed the most protection (Germany) and guidance was not allowed to become a member is pure stupidity.

Germany or Hitler did not cause WWII, Hitler was simply the result of incompetent decisions by the victors of WWI and the German people turned to him in their darkest times as the only person who offered an option of improvement. The real blame lies with the victors of WWI who thought they had the right to govern matters that they did not have comprehension of.
