if you've read fight club you'll know the whole book is a huge rebellion against that very culture (only in its later 90's phase, rather than the rampant consumption and show of the 1980's). helena bonham-carter's character is resolutely NOT  yuppie. the only possible connection for ed norton's character and the 'yuppie' stereotype is that he works in an office (despite being an intransigent worker, always late, and always on the verge of telling his boss to fuck off, the whole job is bullshit etc.). HBC's character is a fuck-up rogue harpie who he encounters on the addicts/terminal illness support group circuit (assuming she is even a real person, but let's not get into that aspect of the book). nothing about her portrayal says 'upwardly mobile, aspirational professional worker'. she's a fuck-up from the start.

'american psycho' is a book about yuppies. 'less than zero' and 'the rules of attraction' are in the same sort of zeitgeist, too, only with the characters being in their expensive private schools, as opposed to their well-connected new york advertising/wall street jobs. those books/movies portray people completely immersed in that lifestyle. 'fight club' is about societies' drop-outs and fuck-ups; all the characters are precisely there because they hate the dominant yuppie culture that is hollowing out existence. to call the characters in fight clubs 'yuppies' is hilarious. and, again, the female lead character in fight club is never once associated with corporate work or fancy living. she's only ever found hanging around in the depressingly low-life and impoverished areas of that modern life.
