I dared to ask technical support what the problems could be with the game not responding after using alt+tab to switch between applications currently running.

Well, this is the official reply:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts. I’m sorry for the difficulty that you are having with Battlefield 2142.

My apologies but we don't encourage tab switching between the game and the desktop since it can affect the performance of the game sharing resources even with Battlefield 2 we have the same stand for that. However, it is your discretion if you prefer to do it this way despite the fact that you are aware that the game will be unstable.

A few things that went through my mind when reading this:
Alt+Tab to switch between applications is an MS Windows standard since version 3.1 at least and they can't make software that reliably works with it 12 to 14 years after that?
I could have BF2 running a whole day minimized and it still would run stable when I wanted to use it.
I'm disappointed and consider this yet another major drawback in the short but well filled history of 2142 drawbacks.

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion doesn't support Alt-Tab either (unless you open something before the game starts).

It makes sense to me. You're playing a game. What are you Alt-Tabbing for? Hiding from the boss?

Changing audio settings,  closing TS,  opening TS,  vent etc,  DLing donkey porn....  wtf does it matter to you?

I can alt tab out,  but when I try to go back in I just get a black screen.  Fucking annoying because my stupid ass can never remember notto alt tab in the first place.

Um...how do they expect you to admin a server now if you can't minimize to bf2142cc?  It doesn't make sense.

Dual Display?

I have no trouble running other apps on my secondary display. When I mouse over to activate them, bf2142 minimises itself, then I just click the task bar or alt-tab to bring BF2142 back up. Never had any trouble with it coming back.
