For a full format, like when installing a new Operating System, just pop in your OS CD and follow the directions. It'll have to format if it's a new drive, but you can format one too if you just want to clean an old one up and start from scratch.

You can also format command prompt and such.

If you don't know what a reformat is, and this makes me assume you own a pre-built pc, I would not do a reformat by yourself or at least without researching the topic more extensively.

And that is precisely what he is doing here.  Good luck on the reformat and enjoy your "new" computer.

A note on formating,  I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate but it's good to have your cd-rom drive as your first boot device.  That way when the system boots up it will automatically try to read data from the cd.   You can change the boot device order in the BIOS.

Neg, no offense but it sounds like you don't either.

I'm trying to make sure you (OP) don't mess up something and have to go without a computer for a few days until you can get it fixed. It isn't that hard, but you could mess something up, and you realize that you will lose EVERYTHING on your computer right?

Also, your reasons for wanting to reformat in the first place don't sound very good. If it has to do with Battlefield games or whatever, reformatting won't solve anything. What might be the problem are massive amounts of viruses on your computer, but I don't know all the aymptoms or your internet habits.

Whatever route you take make sure you backup any data you don't want to lose m8.

Best is to have a C drive for all your programs, then a D drive as storage and backup, that way you can format C and keep all the important shit on your D (porn and whatnot).  And yeah, it's easy, just follow the cd...

Hey Dan,

First question, is your PC a custom build or is it a pre-build? And if you're ashamed to tell us what you've got, rest assured that it can't be as embarrasing as owning a Packard Bell

Right, with it being a Fujitsu the best advice I can give is to contact either Joker3327 or Skoobydu seeing as they both work there. Loonitic (fucker got my tags), The Magic Mullet and {uscm}jyden also work there I think (apologies if I've forgotten anyone).

If it's anything like most other pre-built systems it will have a restore partition built into the drive so that you can use a restore console and get your computer back the way it was when you bought it with all of the loverly drivers already installed. You should just have to stick your internet connection on there and away you go (obviously after windows has spent the next six months updating )

Try giving them a shout. I don't know if they are on shift or anything but there's usually one of them on here at some point during the day. It will almost definitely save you a huge amount of hassle and stress.

As far as I know, fujitsu systems come with a "system restore" disk. Just bung it in and restart it's pretty much automated from there on in. It will obliterate EVERYTHING on your system though, including partitions, and replace it all.

I prefer to boot from the XP CD and then do it from there, (outside of windows).

Granted for a custom build, but a lot of pre-built PCs these days come with a recovery partition that is basicaly the same as Norton Ghost and has an image of the HDD as it was when shipped. This already has all of the necessary drivers (usually with some kind of optimization already done on it) and usually includes installation of the utlities that came withy the PC.

Installing windows from a CD over this can cause a lot of bother as it is unlikely the necessary drivers will have been shipped with the PC on a disc and the only way to retrieve these if you've instaled a fresh version of OS is to download them. Unfortunately, you need the drivers for your modem/network card to get on the internet. Vicious circle see.

Ask Mav how much fun he's just had with his PC having made just that mistake.

Take my advice Dan, wait until either Joker or Skoob are on and then give one of them a PM.

Have you tried all these in this manual uninstall guide, step by step?  It helped me out...

Like they said, don't just jump to formatting it if it's a pre-built unless you download all the drivers you'll need beforehand.

Before you format, make sure you've got all the necessary CD's for things like your internet access, anti virus and stuff to hand.  If you bought from PC World, chances are you might have had some things pre-loaded so you might want to check you've got those things available to put back on later.

Btw, I need to reformat and the only thing stopping me is that I can't find my ISP CD.

Before refomatting, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE DRIVERS. If you dont have them, then go online and download them 1st. Also make sure that all the data you want (save game files, MP3s etc are backed up too). Oh and 1 final piece of advice - DONT EVER STORE ANYTHING U WANT/NEED IN MY DOCS FILE. EVER. When XP dies this folder is generally 1 of the 1st things to go. (Just ask my ex-flatmate. She stored 16GB of movies, MP3s etc in My Docs and when XP died and had to be reinstalled, she lost the lot. I kept telling her not to, but she wouldnt listen.)
