So that other thread got me thinking what City have you visited where you felt intimidated in/not secure had trouble?

I think mine would be Guatemala city - because it seemed to be full of kids with semi automatic machine guns; in soldier uniforms. The only other city I feel edgy in is Amsterdam but that could be the weed, but that being said and done i've never had any bother in any foreign city i've been in, only ever found trouble in Native citys - Belfast/Cork/Limerick

Amsterdam? Are you joking? I don't think I've ever been to a city where I've felt so safe. Obviously, there are dodgy parts, but no one goes there, unless you get really badly lost.

was in Germany a few months ago and landed in the middle of a load of Ost Berlin fans on the train - haha  Skinheads / Riot police every where -pretty intimidating indeed, but we had no bother even though one of the lads looks a bit Turkish

But Rio is definately worse, and probably the least safe in the world (where there's no warfare going on).

This will make you laugh, given that I've been to Palestine, but the list is in the following order:

1. Washington, DC, USA [dia-fucking-bolical]
2. Tel Aviv, Israel (anywhere in Israel/Palestine actually)
3. Ciudad de Panamá, Republica de Panamá
4. Belfast, Occupied Six Counties, Ireland
5. Glasgow, United Kingdom

Safest feeling:

1. Stockholm, Sweden
2. Munich, Germany
3. Helsinki, Finland
4. Istanbul, Turkey
5. La Habana, Cuba

Cities that were safer than I expected them to be:

1. New York City, New York, USA
2. Chicago, Illinois, USA

I've heard more than a few stories, epecially the north side of South America and Central America, where they like to kidnap gringo's for some spending money

I've been to Belfast when an international footy match was being played and thats probably the most intimidating thing ever! Do the Irish have a sixth sense for knowing someones not Irish from a street length away?

Edit: the kids are the worst, they seriously don't fear anything, one of my mates looks like a nazi skinhead, 6 ft 5' and would kick the shit out of a lippy granny if he could. They just came up and threatened to cut his throat unless he gave over his mobile....... they looked 10!

St. Louis got voted highest crime city in the US yesterday followed by Detroit.

I can't say that I have ever felt fear for my life or any of my possessions when visiting St. Louis but then, unlike Calibre, I guess I didn't venture off the beaten path too much.

LOL. Northern Ireland really is an awful awful place. It is just such a divided society and I always feel threatened or that I am being scanned for political beliefs while I'm there. It's just so unpleasant, right down to the dilapidated buildings and intimidating murals.

Derry City in the 80s would have made my list actually. I clearly remember shopping with my parents as a child there and having a British army soldier point a rifle at us from an APC. Not pleasant.

Yep, read this article on Rio..it probably has the same murder rate that Saddam era Iraq had..or even worse:
http://www.washtimes.com/world/20050418 … -8104r.htm

The article doesn't talk about the roving beach gangs.  If you're a tourist to Rio, don't go to copacobana, pão de açucar, or other popular beaches because gangs of kids numbering in several dozen roam the beach beating up people and robbing them.  Cops don't even bother trying to catch any because they multiply faster than you can imagine, and you just can't kill them because you have no room to incarcerate them.

Lawless, reckless abandon.  And it's even worse in February during Carnaval.  Carnaval to the Cariocas (people of Rio) means that Christ (the big statue "cristo redentor") turns his back on the people for 4 days so they can purge themselves of their sins before repenting.  So other than samba dance-offs and parades of naked people, it's 4 days to do your "worst"..this goes for everyone..police, public officials, citizens, etc.  If killing is your thing, then you have a 4 day window..if rape and pillaging is your bag..then off you go for 4 days.  if jacking off on restaurant windows for 4 days is your thing, then happy yanking!  lol  I've seen it in São Paulo (2nd biggest city in the world) and neighboring cities, albeit tamed down compared to Rio, and it's nuts.  makes mardi gras look like a childs petting zoo.  In the northeast of brazil (salvador, Bahia, etc), it lasts 2 months.

well it did use to be a matter of life & death - reminds me of the joke

this man was walking through the markets area of Belfast one night when he gets grabbed from behind & has a knife put to his throat as he is dragged into an alley.

This voice says "are you a Protestant or a Catholic? think very carefully before you answer!!" thinking quickly the man replies "neither i'm Jewish" & the voice says "fuck me, i'm the luckiest Palestinian in Belfast tonight"

I live in the St. Louis Metropolitan area about 15 mins east of Stl in IL.  St. Louis is not a dangerous city.  Thier numbers are skewd.  They numbers should not be so narrow.  If your going to look at St. Louis you have to look at the entire metropalitan area.  Then take that crime rate into the fact that your looking at a population of 1.5 million plus.

Its like this take a sample of 10 people and say 5 of them were involved in a violent crime.  Thats a high crime rate.  But then take the same  5 people in contrast to a larger sample it doesnt compare.

Belfast for me.  Having been there in the 1980s before the ceasefires came in, that was the first place I saw the Army patrolling regular suburban streets.  And being in the pub and being scared of opening my mouth and saying the wrong thing... actually that bit's pretty much like Newcastle Upon Tyne, as a student, used to be.

Nowadays I'm safely ensconced within my comfort zone.  However, my mother's going to do a couple fo years' charity work in Phnom Penh from next Spring and I'm going to visit her.  I think that's going to top my list.

Yeah, Detroits a shithole. As much as I hate that city, I find myself there every once in awhile.
