I think you can own post 86 auto's, I've seen loads of full auto glocks and SMG's. Rifles too.
3 states it was legal when I researched it about 2 years ago.
I think there are about 200k pre-86 autos that are registered in the US...mostly in the hands of collectors now.
The NFA created the distinction from semi-autos, the 1968 GCA started registration of NFA guns, and the 1986 Hughes Amendment closed the registry.
