Ruger 10/22 rifle. Hands down.
This too.
10/22 is very easy to work on.
If you decide to upgrade it, there are many parts commonly available for it.
Barrel is a simple two screws.
Trigger group is two takedown pins, similar to the AR-15 upper/lower pins.
Stock is two screws.
If you get the 10/22T ("T" for target, I guess) - it comes with a heavy barrel, upgraded trigger group, and plastic thumbhole stock.
Step-daughter can regularly hit a penny sized target at 100 yards with it.
(or, roughly, a 1 cm circle at 100m, for the Euros here).
By comparison, a box of 500 rounds of .22 LR is about $15 here, where a box of 500 rounds of 55gr .223 is $200. Same manufacturer for both (Federal AutoMatch for .22LR, Federal XM193 for the 5.56mm AR-15 ammo)
For wild pigs, though, I'd suggest a larger caliber.
Magnum revolver, or shotgun with slugs.
For under $500, you can get a decent shotgun.
Just make damn sure there's no barrel choke before you put a slug round through a shotgun.
