First figure out what you want, then do some online searching. Some places really mark up firearms. Sometimes you can save a lot shopping online. Use an FFL Finder to find dealers in your area that do transfers. Call around to see what they charge. Smaller dealers or those who work out of their home usually charge less, $10-15 if you're lucky. Some places charge $50 or more. I don't know what it's like in NJ, but I'd think anything over $25 is high.

If you buy a firearm online you usually have to pay shipping $10-30. Some places include it in the price. Some charge 3-4% for using a credit card. Buying out-of-state may also save you sales tax. Take all that, plus the price of transfer into consideration. You can really save a chunk of change if you find the right deal.

According the the O.P. (shooter) one round was a Corbon/Glaser Pow'RBall (MFG LINK) and one was a FMJ. Shot placement is the key and even though he didn't kill the attacker, his shots sure stopped the attack.

But it does matter to the courts because they'd be charging the guy with attempted murder, not robbery.  I have no doubt the dude was scared, I'm just questioning him saying his life was in danger.

Nobody could know their intentions in this type of situation. The State may not believe they could get a conviction for attempted murder and may go for a lesser charge (assault, robbery, car jacking, etc.). The police, court system and jury know the outcome of these types of events because they're reviewing them after they happened. The charges are usually based on the outcome of the crime, not the intentions. This attack could have easily ended in a murder.
