Does Patriotism and competitiveness between nations a negative thing that separates us all and makes us forgot one important that which is that we are all humans, does it make us compete rather then work together does it separate us rather then unite us?
Good thread... I'd personally say that it depends on how it manifests. Having pride in your country is good within reason. Being arrogant about it, isn't.
I think the turning point of where patriotism becomes bad is when you can honestly say that you believe your country is justified in doing whatever is best for its interests, regardless of the repercussions. That's bad patriotism....

Hard question. I would argue that loving your country is a very different thing than what people thought patriotism meant where I grew up. Because I didn't have republican values, I was called a communist, fag and many other foolish comments. Because of this fact, I pretty much hated America when I was an early teenager. I voiced my feelings to a family friend and he said simply this: "As an American, it's your job to make things better ." This meant alot to me, and really defined what patriotism means to me. The beauty of this place is that if you try hard enough, you can make a change in the way things work. Even small changes make a difference.
Patriotism is important for national identity, but it can get dangerous if people take it too far 'in the name of the country'
i hate to be one of those people who always pick on America but do you believe America going to far with the Iraq war?
Yes. I think it will go down as one of the biggest mistakes in modern American history.rob777 wrote:

Well, of course it does.rob777 wrote:

Its a matter of survival.
but do really think its a matter of survival at yhis day and age dont you beleive we are more intellgent and beyond that now
Well... That's a hard one to answer. I think many individuals are intelligent enough to go with the idea of working together as a species, but I believe these people are greatly outnumbered by... shall we say... less perceptive types. Since most people harbor several deep-seated insecurities, they need an outlet to take pride in. Patriotism often provides this outlet.rob777 wrote:

For what it is worth, competition is the biggest motivator of innovation.
When it comes to capitalism, most definitely. It's not so innovative when it comes to border conflicts.weamo8 wrote:

Patriotism is the cause of most problems in the world. Could Hitler have started WWII without the patriotism the nazis felt for their nation? Could any war or international conflict start without a certain amount of patriotism? Probably not.
so is it all about finding the balance and not letting it go to far?
Patriotism is good. Unquestioning faith in government is not. Questioning your leaders is part of what true patriotism is all about.
yup.Bertster7 wrote:

Wait, that's religion. Crap.
I definately consider myself patriotic. I love my country, and my ancestry is very intertwined with U.S. history. I'm proud of my country....and don't fault others for their pride in theirs.
I still don't like the French though.
What I really don't understand is Mexicans. The illegal mexicans that come to the U.S. love to show off Mexican flags, put mexican fringe in their vehicles....and show off Mexican pride in many ways. If Mexico is sooooo great.....then why the hell are you here in my country?? Go back and trash your own country.

lol how lot of people like to show off the countries they came from to it doesn't really bother me though i guess when you become a Canadian it doesn't mean you have to "give up" your old nationality
I was going to say no, but then I read your post. Now I have to say yes.rob777 wrote:

just like Tony Sinclair says "All things in moderation"
Blind patriotism can be bad. One should decide for oneself whether their cause it worth or not and they shouldn't let a government decide for them. It can also be used to stir up emotions for a cause that otherwise wouldn't be supported. However, one may then support the cause to avoid being excluded and condemned as un-patriotic.

Define Patriotism.
Patriotism
noun- devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty.

The only good thing about patriotism is that it helps maintain different cultures. Everything else about it is negative, in the sense that the only reason one loves his own (be it country, people, language, food, town or neighborhood) is because he has memories of it.

Patriotism isn't inherently bad. When people begin mistaking Patriotism for Nationalism, well...that's another story.
I've talked about that subject several times in various threads in this forum though.
