Whilst in Cuba I, rather surprisingly, had access to the US version of CNN in the hotel I stayed in for the first four days. I watched with great interest and to be honest great horror and disdain. It is an affront to journalistic integrity and a propaganda-machine of Orwellian-Goebbelian proportions. I am familiar with the likes of FOX News too as whenever I return home to Donegal I can watch it on their digital package. It too is an affront to journalistic integrity and a propaganda-machine of Orwellian-Goebbelian proportions.

In every report carried by either station subliminal messages pervade every facet of each story, each one crafted with subtle language designed to lead the viewer to a particular conclusion of their choosing. Tickertapes clutter the bottom of the screen planting subliminal ideas in the minds of less-discerning viewers. The lines between news item and editorial are all but completely indistinguishable. Headlines can now, it seems, carry a question mark: essentially allowing 'news' channels to plant an idea in a viewers head for which they need provide no proof or indeed have any basis for proving at all.

The majority mindless masses of the world watch TV with their 'awareness' and 'discernment' levels set to near zero. These people have votes. When the news media operates in such a seemingly unregulated and completely biased fashion bad things happen, as history can testify. Propaganda can even rewrite history in the minds of the imbeciles.

So, what are we to do about this? The most powerful nation on earth is infested with odious indoctrinating tripe for their personal viewing pleasure. Each station slants so much that it is no wonder people in USA have such black/white good/evil 1/0 diametrically opposed viewpoints. What is to be done about the impact propaganda has on the gormless idiots it affects when it comes to election time?

PS Are intelligent Americans not sick of it?

They attack the president in our news agencies, too. What are you complaining about? That is, after all, what you want.

However an interesting slant in the original post with "Are intelligent Americans not sick of it?" thereby calling anyone who watches an American news agency stupid, in essence.

it's really funny every time you hear a joint broadcast between 5Live & some US radio station, and the US host asks the BBC presenter what their opinion is on what ever the subject, you can literally hear the BBC presenter squirm in discomfort.

It's virtually impossible to be neutral on a subject, though we have a show called "Media Watch" on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corp., it's owned by the govt. too, OMG SOCIALISM!) which pretty much either humiliates other channel's news reports with the real facts, or just plain makes fun of them. The Chaser's War on Everything is alot like it too, but in an awesome comedy style too

Well since almost 50% of the u.s population doesn´t beleive in the theory of evolution, i´d say they don´t care about information beeing neither free or correct, if the goverment says soo it must be true right? Kinda like all schoolbooks always are cold hard facts and soo on.

and i think Cameronpoe was trying too say was; The americans who beleives that crap aren´t properly flashed in their bios. Not saying that all who watches the american media (shit) are stoopid.

I think you all need to buy a Canadian satellite dish and watch the CBC news at 10. definately one of the more legit newsfeeds out there.

It is quite embarrassing actually. What's even worse is when a US politician is given a grilling. They just don't expect it and act completely indignantly.

You are way to biased now. Can't read anything you write because it is way to slanted.

I agree. I used to read his posts, but now as I read them, all I see is "America blah blah blah" and simply don't care to read any further. It's becoming tiresome.

What the fuck are you talking about? I am criticizing both sides of the media spectrum equally!!! If that's not balanced then I don't know what is....

Are people reading these posts through some sort of vision/brain filter or something?

Pollux you seem to have difficulty dealing with critical appraisal of the government (or any aspect) of your home nation. Not one of my comments is irrational or off-the-cuff (generally speaking) - I don't spout purile tripe like Major_Spittle or Xietsu - in each point I make there is an opportunity for you to counterpoint: I have accepted many a counterpoint during the course of argument here on these forums. I don't think you have engaged me in argument even so much as once. Perhaps it's for the better if you cease to read my posts.

PS Why not start a thread critical of aspects of my home nation if you feel compelled to for any reason? I would be happy to argue or agree, based on whatever viewpoint you put across.

PPS It's legitimate to criticise despotic nations and terrorist bands but people on this forum can't accept criticism of their own governments? Rather depressing thought in what purports to be 'the free west'.

The Daily Show. It insults all political parties evenly.

But seriously its really really sad the news in the US, I remeber some one saying back during the 2004 election: "It really sickens me that the only unbiased election coverage I can get is from BBC world service." It sickens me too, that news is more about agenades and who is paying who than getting out striaght facts.

They're free to present counter-arguments.... some responses here are lame to say to least. I don't post to have such submissiveness cast in my face. I post to generate argument and debate. Oh well....

You continue to insist that you're "fair and balanced" to gain credibility. In reality, your posts are generally one-sided (anti-American). Before you deny that, simply look through your own posting history.

I don't purport to be 'fair and balanced'. See the inverted commas Pollux - that's called sarcasm, something I thought you liked. I'm poking fun at Fox News. A station whose motto is 'Fair & Balanced' which it quite obviously isn't.... *sigh*

Quite, however, when our newspapers are written at a 6th grade reading level and 1/3 of the population is functionally illiterate...well...

I have no answers. Until news is seen as something other than a business in the traditional sense and until this culture of tabloid news is done away with I won't hold out much hope for the future.

Which is why I generally trust the BBC - it's not funded like a business but through a "stealth" tax in the UK.  We have to pay for a television licence (historically there was also a radio licence but that's been dropped, thankfully) that UK citizens have to pay for whether or not they watch the BBC.  If you have a television or computer that's capable of receiving television signals, you have to pay the yearly licence fee, which is currently £131.50 (approx $250 USD).
