Sure, it was used to ward off evil spirits, but not many people know that. The majority of the population know it as the Nazi symbol, promoting evil and Nazism.
so....are they supposed to change it because people are ignorant?

swastika is actually Chinese in origin -- u probably saw a Buddhist Temple.
Its actually waaaaaaay older than that, I come from a place called Ilkley in the UK, and up on the moors around the place are rock carving called cup and ring stones. Noone knows what they were for and the most famous is known as the swastika stone. Funnily enuff its a swastika. These stones are reckoned to be carved around 6,500 years ago.

actually I'm about 1.5 miles from where they're assembled, Robins Air Force Base - Home of the Eagle, I saw at least 2 sitting on the flight line freshly put out and waiting for paint along with a C-5 or two, and yes you can see them from the highway out front, nothing you can't see on the discovery channel

edit: I'm on the base, just on the opposite end from the flight line, about to head up there once I clear this paperwork

oh no, you're right, I can't usually get pics downloaded at work, they're both boeing craft but the eagle has straight verts and more angualar construction, it's also a good bit older i believe, something looks funny about the intakes, but there are alot of variants of the hornet

And seeing as how you're answering anyway............

Isn't it normally called an F/A-18?  If so, is the A due to the F-15 being primarily an interceptor whereas that 18 is a multi-role craft?

Yes I have but I'm still stating that the Iron Cross is most known as being assosicated with the Nazi Party as well as the swastika....   Just making an observation but good call out...

The 'sun wheel' is an old symbol which was stolen from the Nazis. They weren't even able to invent one themselves

Germany is most known for it's association with the Nazi party.  Do you want them to disappear themselves?

I for one DO NOT associate the Iron Cross with the Nazi party. I do associate it with the Prussian and Germanic armies.

Yes the "A" in F/A-18 (Super)Hornet is there because of its multi role functionality. It was, to the best of my knowledge, the first aircraft to have this designation. The plane was designed to fight its way to a target, drop a bomb, and then fight its way back to its carrier. Most of the planes in the NATO arsenal have been either retrofitted, or adapted to fulfill this purpose, but the F/A-18 was the first to be specifically designed for this purpose.

I'm enjoying the answers in here. There have been a lot of astute observations so far. My only argument is that the Iron Cross belongs to the proud people of Germany, and not to the Nazis. It's like saying Spatzel is Nazi, you just can't do that!

I was at home the second time I posted, so I could see the pic, but the hornet has many different outfits, and the prefixes and suffixes denote their role, most are singe seat fighters, some are 2 seat medium range bombers, some are 2 seat medium range recon,  even an E/A-18 (called a growler rather than hornet) variant for electronic warfare, they just announced another config, but I can't recall offhand what it does, at the time that they began designing it, the US NAVY (the major consumer of 18's) required somewhere around 10 or 12 craft to do what the Hornet now does, basically the prefix is the role, and the suffix is the update

and I agree with shopvac about the cross, I think the nazis embraced the use of the cross to help promote the extreme nationalism but you can clearly see it on earlier german units, like the Fokker bi-planes in WWI

I was just making an observation on wearing the Iron Cross around, Use to have people yell at me and/or ask me what it was about. I had to explain about 100+ that it was an medal from the U.S. service, maybe it's just something that people don't know about it.

From what I remember in my World History book last year...
Prussia was one of the Germanic states for a long time (I think back from at least the 17'th century), and under Otto van Bismarck, it became united into the country now known as Germany.  So you can sorta consider Prussia to be Germany.

Oh, and how many people here are actually disputing that the Iron Cross is a simple military award of Prussian origin, and the swastika was originally a symbol (mainly of peace) for many religions.  Just like pyramids, it either started up on its own in several places, or was used in Atlantis (lol).

I don't think that's entirely fair:  it is a medal of German origin, and a disproportionate amount were awarded during both World Wars.

SIDE STORY:

A tornado hit my home town in the 90's Damaging alot of homes. Old homes. Now on these homes was a siding paper called "red rosin paper".  These homes were built with this paper in the early 1900's, the first ten years...... before Hitler.  Now, the Red Rosin company's logo was a swastika.  Every few feet there was a white piece of paper on this red siding paper with a big red swastika on it.

So after the tornado down a particular street that was hit very bad, there were hundreds of swastikas all over these houses that lost there siding but patches of this paper remained.  Not a very deep story, but an odd sight none the less.....
