On September 4, 2006 shortly after 11:00 AM local time, Irwin was killed in a marine accident while filming an underwater documentary in the Batt Reef off the Low Isles near Port Douglas, north of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. It is believed that a stingray barb penetrated his chest causing a fatal wound, though this has yet to be confirmed by Australian officials.

No, this is appropriate.  Even the newsreaders on the TV have been saying this, damn fools.
It would be ironic if had been hit by a bus.

great man, and a loss for australia and the wildlife-loving community.

Although his methods made him look like a wacko from time to time, you would have found no one who loved animals and wildlife more than he did. He contributed so much to environmetal awareness worldwide.
As has been said before, he died while doing something he loved.

I feel for his family.

RIP steve

RIP Stevo

Met him and Teri at australia zoo few years back....seems fitting that he died doing something he loved.

What pisses me off is that the press and TV only seem to mention the "Incident with the baby" and him bothering whales and seals in Antarctica..................they always focus on the negative and seem to forget what he has done for Animal welfare and how much he loved what he did.

You'll be missed mate!

Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was at Batt Reef, off the remote coast of northeastern Queensland state, shooting a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam too close to one of the animals, which have a poisonous bard on their tails, his friend and colleague John Stainton said.

"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.

Crew members aboard the boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead when they arrived a short time later, Stainton said.

Totally weak and uncalled for..... sure he could be over enthusiastic and annoying at times, but he was doing what he loved to do.

My Sympathy goes out to his family.

To me it still fells surreal becaue of all of the encounters which he has survived with far more dangerous creatures it just gave the impression that he was never going to die doing what he loved which was also due to how cautious and professional he was in everything he ever did.

As Dieselboy said, what is destroying his reputation is the negative coverage that the media is re-introducing and all of the useless "oh how ironic" stuff its just rude and inconsiderate.

He was truely an Australian and animal activist icon and in everyones eyes will always be remembered as that as well as a caring and loving father and i truely fell for his wife and two children now.

RIP Steve, you will always be remembered
