I'll usually tip some roughed-out figure of ten to twenty percent the cost of service, based on my estimation of the time and effort put into it. For the most part (excluding large parties, which operate under a completely different set of arbitrary and unexplained rules which require a certain connection to the Force to not screw up), it ranges from $2 to $10, and I never feel bad about it.
Tipping as a social requirement is stupid and inconsistent, but not tipping makes you look like an ass and won't force companies to suddenly start paying people more. And, for instance, I don't eat out or order delivery very often, but I'd rather not have to find a new place each time to avoid spit in my food.

The only reason I tip is so I can hand over an even number of notes, unless I need coins for the vending machine at work - in which case I'll have the change back.

When it comes to getting a tip for something that doesn't normally require tipping, it is customary to decline the tip and the other person has insist you take the tip and then you accept it. You have to do this even if you really want the tip.
I almost paid a £50 tip for a £42 meal last night because I was drunk and didn't understand what the card machine was telling me. It even warned me that it was above the usual amount and I pressed yes.
Luckily they refunded it and then I entered the right amount for the tip and the waitress said "oh just so you know we don't get the full amount when you tip on the card machine" so then I cancelled it again and we started over again. It's dumb that they don't get the full amount on a card tip.
