As a Californian, my vote in national elections counts for less than 1/3 of the vote of someone from Wyoming.

I would guess most people who complain about California know next to nothing about the state. We are just like any other state- go outside the metro areas and you see meth labs, missing teeth, run down towns and drug abuse problems.

It's always interesting for me to see people learning civics lessons for the first time in their life at 40 years old. Whaddayamean there's an electoral college!?
How would America get on with the entire creative part of the country separated off? Tech, film, TV and videogames?
What would they have left, crops and mud derbies?

Also porn, isn't pretty much all the porn produced in California?

Bidden is asking people to wear a face mask for just the first 100 days but "not forever". The coincides with the first 100 days of his presidency so it is symbolic more than anything. I predict that by the end of his first 100 days vaccinations will widespread, affordable, etc. and we could start unwinding lockdowns and begin an economic recovery. If Biden shows some empathy, passes stimulus and just hangs around for 2 years, he could actually do well in the midterms.

Deflated by a loss he has yet to acknowledge, Mr. Trump has cushioned the blow by coaxing huge sums of money from his loyal supporters — often under dubious pretenses — raising roughly $250 million since Election Day along with the national party.

More than $60 million of that sum has gone to a new political action committee, according to people familiar with the matter, which Mr. Trump will control after he leaves office. Those funds, which far exceed what previous outgoing presidents had at their disposal, provide him with tremendous flexibility for his post-presidential ambitions: He could use the money to quell rebel factions within the party, reward loyalists, fund his travels and rallies, hire staff, pay legal bills and even lay the groundwork for a far-from-certain 2024 run.
Christ, I was going to ask who the hell keeps donating to him but I know the truth is that it probably is people with some paranoia and compulsion. Like I throw money at the Red Cross, this is the God republicans wish to please.

I'm sure a lot of people are misled into throwing money at it to "stop the steal."

So congress passed another relief bill. People making $75,000 get $600. A couple less than $150,000 get $1200. Unemployment gets a $300 a week boost. There were some bizarre reforms to the student loan process. And there is some small business stuff. Grand total is about $900 billion.

Don't need the $600 but I will make sure to blow it.

So teasing martial law in response to Trump's "non-loss" to force military oversight of a revote I guess is still being teased, and is being paraded by various Republican pundits and politicians. "Am I gonna do it? Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. It will be a surprise!"

Or maybe he'll push to be appointed chancellor and then we can have our military election in 2021.

I guess you have to be living here, because he definitely still feels like a specter with scattered party officials and pundits testing the waters to see if they can incite violent response. McConnell himself got a backlash for congratulating Biden on his victory.

that's crazy. the european media have definitely switched to 'business as usual' and mostly covering the transition process, perhaps out of some sense of civic responsibility i guess.

I can finally say, after 4 years, that I feel like he's finally being ignored and only looked at as the crackpot he is.
Sure there's plenty of crap still coming out of him and 1600 Pennsylvania, but we've almost reached the point where everyone just kinda shrugs and rolls their eyes to what he's saying. We've turned more of a 'What isn't he doing to help Biden' or 'What dumbass thing has he said now' stage, rather than a 'How is he going to fuck all of our days up today' stage.
I think newbie just needs to take a deep breath and turn off the news for a day or two. People are finally metaphorically turning off their TV's and going outside.

I was investigating a spurious post I saw online and found my way to the politics board of a Texas bow hunting forum and was mesmerized by what I saw. Obviously there's a bunch of middle-aged, right wing Christians who love Trump. There's a thread sharing all their Parler handles and discussions of Qanon predictions of bombshells dropping any day now. It's weird that their main news sources seem to be Twitter, Youtube and 24-hr cable news, but I guess that's unsurprising for the conspiratorial conservatives. But the funniest thing to me is when they call another clearly right-wing social conservative ho isn't as enthused as them a liberal and say something about pronouns because they only have one joke. I'm almost tempted to make an account and inquire more.

I deal with Trump supporters on a near daily basis, from the non-committal "I didn't vote for him but check out this 100th pro-Trump meme I made/found" to the true believers who are up front about it. I can safely say that he is not yet irrelevant to them.

Can probably relax a little when they stop receiving all these probing calls to arms.

How does Trump even come up in conversation? I have never had a person try to convert me to MAGA in real life. They probably look at me and assume I won't be interested and that's fine with me. I just don't see how those conversations come up.

Pretty much that. I might bring up politics like 5% of the time, but a lot of them are full of the latest on things like stolen elections, deep state conspiracies, and other Fox-brand fake news. I'm usually a good listener I guess, so maybe they think they're close to converting me back or whatever.

I was talking to a friend about sports being blind hero worship and he immediately thought i was talking about him defending Trump. Completely out of context. Ive never once had a conversation with him about Trump or his personal politics.

He is one of those people who has gone from not caring about politics to making it a big part of who he is in the last 4 years. Unfortunately for him he does not understand how the US government works enough to make any type of coherent or intelligent defense of our current government, which also means he can't address critical failure points and instead resorts to nonsense.

But hey, I'm sure his opinions do well in whatever online echochamber he's insulated himself in!

NYT alert I got.
President Trump on Tuesday evening threatened to derail months of bipartisan work in Congress to deliver $900 billion in coronavirus relief to a country battered by the pandemic, demanding sweeping changes and cuts to a bill he called a “disgrace.”

The president, who has been preoccupied with the baseless claim that the election was stolen from him, seized on congressional leaders’ decision to pass the relief bill by combining it with a broader spending plan to fund government operations and the military, portraying the other spending items as “wasteful and unnecessary.”

“It’s called the Covid relief bill, but it has almost nothing to do with Covid,” Mr. Trump said in a video posted on Twitter.
That's unfortunate if he vetoed it.
