You're not in touch with your roots enough. Apparently you should be a member of the Black Panthers because you were born with a different skin color than I was.

the history of house and techno music is tied very closely to social struggles. it started out as outwardly political music. it was made by black dudes from chicago and detroit. their acts were self-consciously social+political. calling house music "gay" is funny, if you consider its history. you are basically calling a bunch of black dudes that wanted political equality/emancipation 'gay'. which, when you are black, is ironic, and sort of self-spiting. i never said he should like the music. it's a matter of preference. but to characterize it as "gay" is amusing. it was historically the music of marginalized minorities.
That's like saying building railroads and walls is an intrinsically part of chinese culture.

@cybargs: art is not the same type of cultural production as a wall

no i'm not at all. look, i'm not saying house and techno music are "essential" parts of black character. they are obviously not. it's just music. what i'm saying is that dissing it is historically ironic, because it was used to represent and stand up for black struggle. to make your analogy work, you'd have to be a chinese person that was laughing at/dissing itinerant workers. THEN it would be the same ironic effect. as i said: either a level of historical ignorance, or self-loathing. i'm not saying anything from a past or culture 'defines' a person. i'm just saying that certain things historically take on a certain light. i know you struggle, but don't be stupid.

@Roc: i believe in you.

i like it when jay gets self-righteous and makes himself look stupid.

yes jay, there is no such thing as african american culture. "there is no black, only american". the 20th century hasn't been the century of race struggle and battles for social equality in america, has it? there are no race cultures in america. you are only an american. that's why obama being elected was such a big deal right? just another american being elected. various forms of art, expression, music, fashion etc. haven't developed around certain races, have they? i mean, it's not like black people have their own tv channels or comedy industries in america. no, not at all. no cultural output specifically marketed or sold to a mainly black demographic. bill cosby is just american. his sitcoms were just american. don't be racist! race doesn't form part of identity at all in america - you are all just americans. just ask malcolm x.

and, again, nowhere did i say the music defines or essentializes black people. not every white american should like country music. what i'm saying is that dissing a music that has PURPOSEFULLY been tailored to REPRESENT race struggle - i.e. openly politicized music, with an important historical role and cultural significance - becomes ironic. it was music that was used as a positive force for black people. roc disses it, saying it is gay. never have i said he HAS TO LIKE IT BECAUSE HE'S BLACK. i just said it's ironic. nowhere am i saying that every chinese person has railroad building in his genes. BUT, if a chinese person said that workers who build railways are "stupid" or "gay" or something to that effect, it would also be IRONIC, on the historical and social plane.

are you people really so dense you can't get this concept of irony? lol it's like arguing with a bunch of grown babies.

Just stop posting, racist.

The fact that you don't see that pigeonholing someone into a cultural demographic because of their skin color as bad just makes you even more racist. I know you only know what you were taught in textbooks, but the entire liberal dogma regarding race and race politics is what is holding people back. Emphasizing differences between us instead of what is common cements racism, it doesn't do anything to do away with it.

lol jay you are so inane you are reusing the exact same insults people level at you towards others. first "putting on airs", now "you only know things from textbooks". do you write down everything bad people say to you in a 'good insults' notebook or something? hahaha it's genuinely funny, the level of self-denial you must be in to do that with a straight face.

and how am i racist by pointing out there is an african american culture within american life? i live in a multi-cultural society. i am not racist to say there is a british muslim culture, or an eastern european culture within britain. it's all part of the plurality which i am happy to live in. i don't think anyone is bound to a culture when it comes to what they should like. i have made this very clear in every single post. all i said is that calling certain forms of protest/political expression "gay" is to be ignorant or to spite your own culture's history. lol. racist.

yes i'm so racist when i listen to and take interest in the history of house and techno music. i'm basically a neo-nazi.

It's the same thing. He called roc out for making fun of part of 'black culture' as if he'd bitchslapped his grandmother. Complete racial profiling.

no, i called roc out for calling a certain sort of music "gay" that was used PURPOSEFULLY and POLITICALLY as a form of black protest. not just 'black culture'. music that was made with the outward political agenda of BLACK PROTEST and BLACK PROGRESSIVISM. if a black person doesn't like lil wayne, i'm not going to call him out, because lil wayne is also black. i just said it's ironic he dissed a music that was actually designed to represent black people when they were marginalized. that's a little different than calling something out because they don't like everything 'in the history of their culture'. i already said in one of my first posts that i don't like maypole dancing, i.e. outruling your logic.

every time jay posts some contrived personal insult, some random fabrication of the day, i just picture this jay from the wire

https://seriesaddict.fr/images/galerie/The-Wire/promo3x04/Jay%20Landsman%20-1.jpg

now i mean, there is nothing in my pictures suggesting homosexuality. my background claims to a certain class and cultural capital are quite factual and value neutral. but how do you deny the verisimilitude above? that is quite another matter.

folkish/ein volkish nature-harvest ritual stuff that white western people do in the spring. i do not like it.

https://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/mayday/images/maypole.jpg

however, i will not call everyone who does it and who wants to preserve this folk tradition "gay". and, furthermore, and more importantly, it has not been historically used as a form of protest or white struggle. quite different from my example of house and techno music and its relation to the history of african american culture.

this really is quite simple.
