This isn't as much of a rant as it is a question...I don't know much about the new unlock system, other than I hear there's tons of unlocks. Here's what I'm wondering...will the players who have tons of unlocks (and therefore have played alot) completely dominate newer and/or more casual players who don't have many unlocks?

I would expect, to some extent, there to be a natural correlary between playtime and skill, but lower playtime also would not necessarily mean lower skill. The nice thing about the BF2 unlocks are that there isn't a vast difference between unlock guns and base guns. Sure they're better, nobody would question that, but not so much that somebody with a F2000 dominates or somebody with an MP5 has no chance whatsoever.

I do appreciate how in BF2 you could get your hands on one or two unlocks without too much intense work, thereby making you not completely helpless and giving you access to one or two of the more advanced weapons. That was a good call by EA...I hope it will work the same way in 2142.

But I wonder...is the nature of the unlocks in 2142 such that it will create those imbalances? If I play casually, say only several hours a week, will I simply be mopped up every time I join a server because someone puts in hours a day and has all the fancy-pants guns and gear I don't? Or will the difference between the haves and have-nots not be so staggering as to discourage new or infrequent players from joining servers?

Thats a good question i hope the weapons are well balanced otherwise we will end up with a J-10 Vs F-35 sort of thing but on the ground!!!

The last post just had me thinking of a platoon of Chinese troops having their arms raised  moving a J10 around on a battlefield with their american counterparts and a F-35.

Just kill him, steal his kit and mop his face again with it....I don't think balance is about firearms, let alone number and quality of available vehicles. Teamplay, coordination, efficient squads and skillful players make the difference...

Less of a chance than bf2 since unlocks now excedd being guns only.

The gun unlocks are sorta like this
PAC are lighter guns, but have more ammo and are higher-tech, etc.
EU are heavier
The unlocks are basically copies of the EU and PAC weapons for that class so an EU player who likes a light gun can pick the light gun.

I believe you can have only 2 other unlocks, so it's not like you can have a guy with an advanced med-hub, defil, rifle rocket grenades, rifle shotgun, and frag grenades.

well you have unlocks that you will have always and then you have unlocks which you can get by having a certain score on a server so that you basically can get a higher tier unlock even through that you don't have enough points in your stats, it simply works by doing a lto of things for your side and a unlock o meter fills up only once a game (that's all the time your on the server even when it switches maps) and you get to choose a temporary unlock for that game. and the first unlock you basically can get in one round if your good enough and you defiantly get it in the second round if you don't get it in the first so very balanced. for each kit there's also two unlock paths you can follow fx you can choose between two unlocks which each lead to another unlock or that is what i think it means.

You're kidding me!!! In my opinion this is a terrible idea, if this is true. I hope I'm reading it wrong. Are you saying that you gain access to new "temporary unlocks" by the amount of time you spend on one server for one play session?!

For one thing, we've seen how badly BF2 1.3 affected server stability. Why in the world would we want to trust to another game on the same engine to maintain stability?! Also, this handicaps players who don't play for long periods of time in one sitting. Not all of us have hours on end to spend in front of the computer in one game session. Unlocks should be rewards for ranking-up and achievement, not for sitting on your butt for long spans of time. Please tell me I'm misinterpreting you.

I could see this being a great concept for "community building" if it instead kept track of total time spent on a particular server, not necessarily in one play session. For instance, you would be rewarded for playing 25 total hours on JoBobJethro's BF2142 Server.

People who frequent a single server would be rewarded and in turn they would also build friendships and get to know the same crowd of people who play there. I think people would be more likely to form squads and work together if they get to know each other and get used to playing with them regularly.

Why worry? If the soon to be BF2142-community keeps bitching and whining long and loud enough, Dice will for sure patch the weapons around like they did with BF2.

I also don't get this idea of temporary unlocks and can't imagine any version of it I would support.

the one big thing i dont think is a smart move was making the shockpaddles an unlock. so in the first few months ppl wont b revived on the most part.

y?

most ppl will want better guns instead of a shockpaddle, and the whole active camo will make ppl drool.

so the majority of ppl wont even get the shock paddles until later on in the game.

Yes I can understand and agree with that point. But I also have yet to see the nature of the unlockable weapons for BF2142. In BF2 they were only-slightly-more-powerful versions of the existing weapons and, while certainly advantageous, weren't overpowered. What I'm hoping to express is that I hope that same balance is maintained in BF2142 and hopefully the quantity of unlocks won't turn into a qualitative avalanche of superiority, nor will there be certain "super-unlocks" that will rule the game. Again, this hasn't happened historically and hopefully will not in the future.

And just to be clear, yes I agree completely that good teamplay, coordination and skillful players are the ultimate determining factors. Unfortunately those are three things that can't always be counted on in a public server.

With the free rank-up for previous BF2 players, not to mention the "free" ranks being given away for BF2142 preorders via Gamestop.com, I'm willing to bet there will be alot of shock paddles out there.

unlocks.. well like the dude said, there is not that much difference between the base guns and the unlockable guns. however there are a few exceptions:

the G36c is the grandaddy of spec ops carbines. it has outstanding accuracy to the point where you can snipe with them. hard but possible to snipe with iron sights.

the g3 although has a 20 round clip does more damage than an standard issue assault rifle.

the g36E is better than the m16a2.

for 2142 i say make the unlocks or base guns customizable. i say make the 2142 unlockable guns have a noticable factor than base guns such as a faster rate of fire or more stopping power or more zoom. the only problem of bf2 unlockables is that the majority of the guns lack some sort of 'kick'.

Well, you don't get nades or paddels off the bat, but you can do plenty with the stock kits. It just makes life a lot easier and such with unlocks.

What do you mean useless, do bullets just pass right through it??? Let me guess they put the revieve points down to +1 or something. How is the first aid??? Does it heal fast because you only get one?

The first unlock is at like 10 points (not really, but close). People will rank up quick, so I don't think it's a big deal.

the time you need to stay on a server is only like 10- min and you won't get the unlock when you come back on the server again so you must get the points again everytime you leave the server. it's just to make it easier to see which unlock you want next because you basically couldn't in bf2.
