Well i'm looking into a new computer and I've got a budget of $1,700. I'm going for Intel and this what I need it for:

General Music, and movies (basically multitasking like hell)
Faster than fast
If its for gaming enough to set BF2 on high and medium
And school work like Word and stuff

So this is where i need your help. I've only changed RAM and put in PCI cards and AGP cards so creating a computer it possible but i'd need a lot of help. Like I said my budget is $1,700 and i'm looking forward to Intel Duo Core stuff whether its a Pentium D or a Duo Core chip.

I just bought me a new computer a month ago. It came out to to fit that budget. Here are the specs.

-: $120 - Pentium D 805 chip (great overclocking potential).
-: $200 - 2 GB OZC ram (with a 40 dollar rebate at the time).
-: $240 - Intel D975XBX Motherboard (Only one I found in stores that will run Core 2 Duo in the future, had to invest in future upgradability. You could get one for under $175 I'm sure).
-: $100 - 500W Antec Power supply.
-: $130 - 250Gb Harddrive (You might be able to recycle an old one/ Save some bucks).

So far we're at $800 dollars. You still have a Case, CD/DVD Drive, and Video Card left to buy. You might also want to get an upgraded cooling kit like a Zalman Fan ($60) to get some good overclocking. I went with a watercooling kit for $100, and I have the processor running at 3.8Ghz. I also found that the x1900xt's had gone down in price by the end of last month, so I picked one up for $350 dollars. DVD Burners go for like $75 I think. Finally my computer case was an extra $150.

All in all, it came to about $1,500 for the new rig. Not bad considering the amount of power this thing has :-D. If you scrap some parts such as the water cooling, get a cheaper motherboard, and get like an x1600 or something, you could bring down the cost to like $1,200 or so. Recycle some old computer parts (HD and CD/DVD drive) and you knock it down to $1,000.

Edit: Most purchases were done at Newegg.com. Great prices I must say. Bought computer case at compusa though to avoid high shipping costs.

building your own computer is a bit frustrating (I still cant get RAID 0 to work) but really worth it. Espescially with newegg.com. ill whore out thier name anytime. I built a rad ass computer for 5 Gs that wouldve cost 10+ if I bought it from some computer custom design company. just make sure to match up the right motherboard with a Processor and RAM properly. most parts are interchangeable, but RAM and the PCU are generally board specific for socket types and RAm timings.....

I'm thinking:

1. Dual Core Processor for sure.
2. Lotsa RAM and a good processor speed.
3. GeForce 7800GT or 7950 if you have the money
4. Evereything I listed above will work for school.

Get a a Core 2 Duo processor.  You can turn off the second core for gaming(which is awesome on BF2) , and then turn it back on for when you need multi-tasking, or so I hear.  Get at least 2GB of RAM because it's really good for BF2 and multi-tasking.  You might need more than that depending on how you multi-task.

I love the idea of turning off one core, and leaving the other on, that's so wicked.

I'm sorry, but ignore this guy. Going prebuilt is a very bad idea for so many reasons.

What type of GFX can run BF2 on Medium and High? Currently I have a Nvidia 6600 256. I mean, BF2 is probably going to be the only game that i'm going to play (maybe 2142.....thats a HUGE maybe).

And about the Duo Core they cost alot and they're a little confusing. Which one should I get b/c of all the Ghz is confusing b/c they seem smaller than the other CPUs but are dual core. Whats up with the Pentium D? are they like budget level Athlon XPs in Intel form? Yeah its a lot of questions but theres huge amoutns of new technology coming in this year

7600 for medium to high or 7900 for high all over, more ghz more speed still is the main trend the E6600 and up are the ones to go for. GHz isnt the only thing that affects speeds of processors and pentium D..umm dunno really

in your position i would go with an
intel c2d e6600,
a gigabyte 6-quad 965 chipset clicky,
2x 1gb of low latency (cas latency 4 or less) DDR2-800 (ocz, corsair, geil, g.skill, it doesnt really matter),
either a 7900gt or a 7900 gtx or a x1900gt or 1900xt (really depends how much you are willing to spend, or you could go for a 7600gt and upgreade once directX 10 is out)
for HD go for a pair of sata 7200RPM in raid 0 or a pair of 10000rpm ones if you feeling are adventerous
a nice case with a good quality PSU
and the load of assorted goodies (DVD, fans, lights, etc.)

2gb RAM (enough for multitasking programs)200$ (DDR2 800 for core 2 duo, make sure:p)
mid range core 2 duo (I forget the name, its only around 200-300)
GeForce 7900GT 270$
200gb HDD (not sure on the price, not expensive though)
and a core 2 duo compatible mobo (theres a list somewhere)
and then the rest, If I did my math right all of that is surprisingly under 1,7k

max beat me lol>_<

Pentium D's are the original dual-core processors by pentium. Meant for PC's, etc. VS. the Core Duo's which were meant for laptops and smaller computers.

Core 2 is the new version, which I do believe is meant to be used in all types of computers.

Core 2's are kick ass, but they will run you a good amount of money compared to the older models. With $1700 budget though, shouldn't be much of a problem as you can see from my post before. You could get a $300 Core 2 and still be under budget. If you do want to spend less though, go for Pentium D. Good performance for a great price.

As for video cards, I believe the x1800's run Bf2 pretty well. And they won't cost you a lot compared to the top of the line x1900's... But once again, at for $1700 you could get both Core 2 AND x1900 AND 2GB of ram and still stay within budget.

I'm willing to cut corners but I mean my main sight is on Core 2, 2 gigs, acompatible motherboard and any GPU that is 9550 or above or 6600gt and above would be fine. Its a little troubling considering between the Pentium D and Core 2.

whats ur old hdd? sata? you want some 2 gb, a medium / top card would prbably match to the 6800 gt or higher. just make sure your mobo matches ram and cpu. intel duo core anyway! dont listen to the xp guy, what a fag.

whatever you do get a core 2 duo chip.. the cheapest is around 235.. well worth it since the front side bus makes it nearly triple the speeds of some of the D series chips. They smoke everything out there and are overclockable too...  put the money into the chip, mobo, video, ram, skimp on the case, keyboard, monitor.. you can always find a bigger monitor... trust me
my setup is the Pentium D 805 (bought it just before the duo core 2 's came out   ) overclocked to 3.2GHz
ECS 945P-A 1.1 motherboard (will handle the duo core 2 chips and its only like 75 bucks from newegg)
Radeon X800XL PCI-Express card  (well worth it - can handle bf2 on all high settings with anti aliasing at 6x)
2 GB of PC2-5300 667MHz Ram (Patriot brand.. about 140 from newegg)

if you just sub the new duo core 2 chip for mine you'll have a nice rig... i have a Western Digital 250G hard drive.. you might want to get two HD's (should be the exact same models) and run them Raid 0.

you want core 2... and a better graphics card if u play video games (id prolly get a 7900).. 2 gigs of ram.. u can use ur hd and soundcards probably..

from what ive learned.. you get what you pay for.. so if u get a 'deal' on something that sounds too good to be true.. it is...  this is first computer ive not chinched... and it runs how i wanted it to... unlike my last two computers which i always had obscure problems like restarts and bugs.

I'm deciding to keep my old CRT monitor (yes...its a fat ass but its 20 inches and well....like yeah). Another thing, i have no idea when I'm going to build this computer b/c the only reason i'm doing this is b/c my current computer (HP Pavillion) gets fucked up and I always have to do system recovery (which means spending 3 hours downloading updates, installions) so I decided the next time it does this I'm going to order the pieces. Now its just finding them. I'm got a 160 gb harddrive, not exactly sure what type though.

Build it yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

U have built so many computers.  I had a guy who bought an ALienWare comp and was just so proud... until I built the same thing for half the price.

Save yourself some cash, or spend the cash you save on better hardware.

If you not all that handy, pick the parts you want and take it to you local comp shop.  They charge 25-50 an hour and should only take them 1-3 to put it together.  Then you can put your OS, software, games, etc on it yourself.

As far as intel, I never use them anymore.  I will always use AMD now.  Cheaper and just as fast.

Yea Yea I know "Intels new dual core blah blah blah*.  Just wait a month or so and AMD will meet and beat there new chipsets.  They always do.

ANyhow off topic.  Build it yourself.  You can take a lot more pride in your comp when someone asks *What is it* and you can say *I built it*

Good luck and have fun

Ok I got bored so I built a quick example system using NewEgg.com. Check it out:

- Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811133132
- Powersupply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817103941
- Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131030
- Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115004
- Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820227124
- Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814195019
- Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6822148142

Total comes out to: 7 Item(s) ($1,157.93). As you can see, this still leaves you room to upgrade some parts. Maybe add an extra hard-drive, better video card, 4Gb of ram , faster Core 2 duo.

Update: Switch the video card to a x1900xt and your total only jumps to $1,257.93. Switch the processor to a faster Core 2 Duo and your total jumps to $1,367.93. Add a nicer Sound Card than the integrated one and your up to $1,479.92. Still underbudget I believe.
- Video Card upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814195002
- Processor Upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a … 6819115003
- Soundcard Upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a … 6829102188
