I've found that alot of them are rather rude, and have a better then you type attitude. Now I'm in no way a rude person but I do speak out when this happens. This is in response to CamernPoe's thread on what's wrong with America. So what is wrong with other countries or is it that more and more people are just ASSHOLES... Example: Probably an American but I was in NYC yesterday(which means it was probably an european because no American's can afford NYC) at the movies and an old man with a walker was coming out of a bathroom, and a younger man just wedged his way through nearly knocking the man down.. Not to sound like our fathers before us but this next generation is going to be a mess not to bright a future unless we start beating our kids again and educating them properly.
No offence to majority of people on this forum.
I have to say I had absolutely no probs with any Americans when I was in New York, DC or Chicago - two giant metropoli and a big city. I was in New York before 9/11 and after and there seems to be a marked difference in the attitude of New Yorkers now. There seems to be a good sense of togetherness and the people were a lot friendlier. Chicago - well what can I say - Chicagoans are the best. Best city in America by a country mile too (and the most 'American' feeling too).
I spent a few months in Wisconsin and attitudes there were quite different. There was a lot of racism towards blacks there. The state is predominantly white so maybe that has something to do with it, I don't know. I encountered a lot of extremely ignorant people there who have no idea what's going on outside their county, let alone their state or country. These were the kind of people susceptible to the mindless 'fair and balanced' bushvision views of FOX news and the like. The "USA! USA! USA!" crowd. Patriotism without knowing why or without questioning the actions of their leadership. This is of course a gross generalisation open to criticism.
So my take on things is that,
in general, country folk are the problem in the US, not the city folk. And as for American tourists I meet here in Europe - the ratio of intelligent, well-adjusted, well-informed, discerning Americans to brainwashed, ignorant hicks is massive. Most Americans who go out and see the world are friendly, intelligent, fun loving and sensitive to cultural differences, much like the Americans I met in the big cities of USA.
There are of course
some exceptions to this general rule. One such example would be when I was at Oktoberfest in Munich last year a US helicopter engineer who was on leave from Iraq latched onto us Irish folk (claiming Irish ancestry, ability to drink, etc.) - whenever any of us tried to attempt some pigeon german with the locals (out of politeness) he was like "Hey man! You don't have to speak German man! They all speak English!". He kept reiterating that like a mantra and bordered on the violent at times if one expressed disdain about Iraq. That to me is the type of ignorance many Europeans deplore. He is of course a special case. I mean what man in their right mind would use their leave from Iraq to go to the Oktoberfest and not go home to see his loved ones?!!
