I have my own theory's but there really not backed up by fact.

One of them is that they went bankrupt from fighting the afganise and not having a free market..

Edit: but if anyone else can but some light onto this it would be great?

Yes it was. Well Stalin used all of the money on fighting the Germans, and for getting a better life. There simply was to much money used, then the country went down and first now they are rebuilding it.

One highly significant factor was the Chernobyl catastrophe. The cost of cleaning the mess up broke the bank truly and utterly. I watched a documentary about Chernobyl where top Russian politicians of that era conceded that Chernobyl was instrumental in the downfall of the USSR.

Well USSR was already going down the hill, and that finished the deal. Radioactivity. That is some dead ass dangerously shit. I got an A in it at my final exams. Was really easy, beside I also had to explain about cells, and that was a bit more difficult.

How about the USSR was bankrupt because it needed an enormous amount of money for the arms race? Without the money the Russians weren't able to hold their satellite states. You can surely think of the rest.

Not exactly........same as the British Empire wasn't Britain, per se. You notice Russia still exists today, USSR doesn't.

Why did they go bankrup then? Because everything was public and nobody owned anything.
When that is the case, nobody cares about the factories or cars or such. I think the basic idea of communism is what brought it down.

People need to own things to care about them.

Also, internal corruption. Pretty much they put on a huge facade but in reality they couldn't control their military because they couldn't fully pay them.

That was the main thing.
America bled the USSR in Afganistan, through the funding of Osama Bin Laden types.
I believe it was payback for Americas bleeding in Vietnam, where Russia and China supplied arms and training.
I believe somewhere in the background in our curret war the Bears hand is involved, either through funding, intel. or arms.
