I was messing around on the Alienware website, and I built a comp for around $7000.00 US.  Now, money is not an issue, I can buy it and prolly will, but 2.5 tetrabytes?  WTF.  Is this just over kill?

So, I have to ask, if you could, would you buy one of these?

I remember reading Computer Gaming World of a guy that bought a 10,000 computer but frankly thats the problem with computers. The second you buy something it gets outdated by next week

You could build the same system for half the price (Ussualy less then that) if you build it yourself.

If your not that handy, pick up the parts and have a local shop build it.  They ussualy charge 25-40 an hour and should anly take them 2 hours or so to build.  Then you just install the software.

Spend the extra money on your lady (Or mom).

oh, you are seriously getting a $7,000 computer?

in fact, having 2+ TB will insure you wont need to buy a harddrive for some time

BUT if you want speed, get 2 Western Digital Raptor drives and run them in RAID, that would be very fast
or you could get their Segate counterparts, the Cheetahs

edit: 2 TB, think of the disk defrag time

build it yourself.  Seriously.  Spend less, get more, have more fun, and understand more.  2.5TB won't so much be overkill as it would slow as hell.  I'd spend the money on some 150GB Raptors and stick them in RAID 0 and reap the rewards of performance.  If you're still storage hungry, set up multiple RAID containers with 2 Raptors in RAID 0 and 4 500GB drives.  Even if you put those 500GB drives in RAID 1 for redundancy, you still have a damn TB of secure storage.

then building one yourself wouldnt be a good choice, unless you can get a PC place to do it for you

get a summary of what you want and PM it to me or something

if you don't know shit about comps, then you definitely won't use that space.

I maintain my recommendation, and that of stryyker's (which was being typed at the same time as mine ...)

7000 bucks... try to find a shop that will build a pc for you, you can save at least 3000 bucks

don't get a widescreen monitor.  It still confuses most games.

I still say it needs another 150 raptor to play with in RAID 0.  Just one gets lonely

hey getting a top of the line p2 chassis ALX alienware actually costs a little over 10000$ US. now i do agree with most of the posts about building your own comp... i bought an alienware a little while back for about 5000$ and i was thouroughly happy... i went the alienware route though because of my lack of computer knowledge... my suggestion is if you have the cash, but not the resources or help go alienware... but if you know your shit (which i can admit i dont) you know the benefits of building your own... but i still wuv my alienware...

Man if you are gonna waste 7k on a rig, at least get a Falcon Northwest.  It'll be money well wasted, trust me.   Truthfully, I've never dealt with AlienWare, I shouldn't be giving advice there but I have read far too much shit about them over the years.  A lot of it is bound to be true.

As for raptors in RAID 0, this is nearly SCSI performance for a much lower price.  Since I got mine, load times are extremely fast, I'm almost always in the top 3 or 4 in game.  Highly recommend this option.

Also, PuckMercury mentioned widescreen confusing games, not sure I agree with that one (sorry PM nothing personal...).  True, many current games do not support WS (including BF2) but I run Bf2 at 1920 x 1200 on my 24" widescreen no problems.  It's just a matter of adding an extra line to your shortcut command line.  Also keep in mind that with the widespread use of these monitors anymore, new games will definitely be including support.  Also, when the game is over, you just cant beat all the real estate for doing regular PC tasks.  If your spending that kind of quid, dont sell yourself short on the monitor....but don't scrimp either.  Budget flat panels are mostly crap.  Plan on spending $700+ for a decent 24".

Just my thoughts....

YOU GODDAMN SONOFABITCH, HOW DARE YOU CONTRADICT ME!!

Seriously, are people that touchy about tech recommendations?  lol

I agree that as time marches on it will be more prevailant, but it just simply isn't there at the moment.  Yes, there are ways around it I realize.  But in addition to the fact that some games at present get pissy w/ widescreen, a 19" monitor is going to seem larger than a 19" widescreen monitor.

all IMHO, of course.
