The M16 can't last forever... any ideas on what could replace it? I was convinced it was gonna be the XM8... but for some crazy reason they cancelled the project late last year.

Lets keep the M16. I dont want to be in the trial and error stage with a new rifle in Iraq.

i can see the g36 being it. already developed pretty well, lots of variants already in production. plus what i hear about the L85 not being a very combat-reliable rifle.

Yep the M 16 is due to be replaced, but like you say I cant see by what since they cancelled the XM8 project, which was definatley looking like it held some promise. Cant see what else will step up now, they either gonna have to revive that project, buy of the shelf or start with something new (which would take bloody ages).
The XM8 was based upon the G36 so there would be little point buying that after cancelling an advanceded version of it, and the SCAR was designed spefically for special forces operations not as a standard infantry battlefield rifle.

There isnt a story, because it isn't in development. It was discontinued. But if it survived, it would be a better assault rifle choice for the US military.

Because people in our country don't like guns and war it seems. I think we will not make any more guns and stick to using plastic knives. Or because war is not the answer, we will walk into combat with a diplomatic speech to give because diplomacy is better than war.

Well xm8 isnt exactly dead in the water, its true its suspended indefinately but whenever h&k submit a competiton worthy xm8 that can outdo the scar system it could reapear. However even before it was cancelled the oicw and the xm29 were to be th "real" future. the xm8 was just supposed to be used along with the m16a2 and unless anything changes it will be the xm29 and m16's

The OICW/M29 is a bit overkill.. not every soldier needs a semi-auto grenade launcher... Also from what I've heard these rifles are extremely heavy. Although I loved the OICW in Ghost Recon.ﻍﻏﺱﺖﻇﻸﮚ wrote:

the us millitary is looking for a infantry rifle that fires heavier 7.62 rounds for better pennetration etc.
the xm8 was put on hold (all of us knows that this means cancelled) so that is weeded out. the OICW/XM29 will probally be for special forces due to its cost.

I saw a sweet ass rifle that Israel was devoloping on FUTUREWEAPONS. It looked like it had a ton of potential, and will definataly be getting some combat time to prove it's worthyness.
