I just built a new computer right at the end of May.  The prices have gone down a little bit since then.  Also, this includes a HDD.

PLEASE NOTE: I FORGOT A POWER SUPPLY AND HAD TO RUN TO COMPUSA TO GET ONE.  THIS IS MY DISCLAIMER: DON'T USE YOUR OLD POWERSUPPLY.  BUY A NEW ONE.

So you need a case, psu, mobo, cpu and a gfx card then?

Well i would say get the Intel core 2 extreme x6800 (Previously named conroe) as they are the fastest cpu around at the moment that absolutely obliterate the Amd 64x2's  but...that would eat all of you budget.

So Id say: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ $250.00

                DFI LANPARTY 939, mobo $190

                SeaSonic S12-600 ATX12V 600W $160

                7900GT 256MB $260 (Estimate)

Case isn't something i can choose.

and those prices are from newegg so if you shop around you can probably find them cheaper.

Thats a quick list, so id suggest posting this same question over at www.techimo.com they have good advice and good people that will help you much better than i can.

I built my first system a few months ago. I bought the X-fi the day it came out;
AMD 4400+ w. dual core cpu. Asus deluxe with 2 X Nvidia 7800 gt in SLI ( nothing I can run on high ), 2 gigs Corsair,Xfi 24 bit sound, 620 gig in HD over 3 drives, one external ( for video editing ) one 10000 rpm raptor ( for games ) and one 300 gig for misc.
Setting bios and smartly installing software and drivers was biggest problem. Any tard can assemble parts, its getting it all to work that counts, which means that on top of 5k in parts I paid $1,000.00 for a powerfull enough power supply and a nerd to sort out my programming.
I will never buy a off the self unit again. It was just too much fun.

* edit* Cavalier makes rad cases.

Wow what power supply was that? You would not need anything over 600w for that rig so how comes you spent so much......

Same thing as me, but mine isn't the Pro version.  The Catalyst 6.6 drivers will really help the quality if you haven't installed them yet.

Catalyst 6.7 was released yesterday.

Stryyker, If you can manage 300 for CPU Id look very seriously at Conroe (core 2 duo).  The $300 E6600 has bested FX62 in nearly every benchmark.  Prices and availability are a bit wacked at the moment though, this should settle down within a few weeks.

As far as good processors I own both and can safely say that you should look into running a Athlon 64 Dual Core - it flat smokes any P4 I have ever dealt with, I have three comps and one is a P4 and one is a Athlon 64 dual core and it does everything on BF twice as fast ( I Mean It, I am in the game playing before 60 seconds is up ). Actually on a processor note all the Athlon processors I have ever owned have put out alot more then there rated. Just my two sence on processors. The Athlon 64 you can get for not much money especailly if your going to build your own tower...

I know that you can get better processors then either of these but my pockets are not that deep and sounds like your on a budget as well - Go for the Athlon 64 dual core.

I will not put my money into Pentium processors anymore. IMO for the money Athlon is TWICE as good.

If you cant just go to ATI's web page you can access it from there, at the same time you download the new catalyst... Hope it helps!

Be sure to get a compatible mobo

and DDR2 800 ram

I saw a cheap 7900GT for like 260$ on newegg or 270$, but hey thats cheap lol

If you feel like going SLI , be sure to get a good PSU 60++ dollars trust me, I got lucky with my 20$ 500W PSU xD

Make sure it has like 20+ amps on each 12v rail if it is SLI certified

^.^ good luck with your new computer

Hey lol can I have your old proc and mobo? >_>

Man that really sucks, what catalyst version are you running currently? I think it's catalyst 5.5 or less I could not access that page either until I got 5.7 I think...

Yea Stryyker I am curious to know how that works out as well E6600... When looking for Vid Cards from other experiences I have had just opt to pay alittle more for Nividia...

It seems that one out of every ten posts in these Tech forums has something to do with people building new computers, for specific price ranges. Recent answers can be found with a little bit of searching.

No offense but your whats wrong with these threads anymore - Stryyker is merely asking what peoples opinions are on certain equipment and what peoples experiences with certain equipment are like when playing on the Battle Field... The does and don't s of building your own computer...

Thanks for your input though... read his very first post for crying out load!
